The details of the crimes are what inspired horror film makers to fashion characters like leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs who would both wear skins from their victims.…
Most urban legends contain some form of humor or horror. They show a sign of caution or a lesson to be learned. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Boo Radley can be compared to a popular urban legend called Green Man. Boo Radley and the Green Man are both supposedly horrifying to look at. Both men only come out at night, and when they do, they roam the streets and creep on people. Because Boo Radley shares multiple similarities with The Green Man, he should be considered an urban legend.…
Of Monsters and Men: The Psychopath Phenomenon Psychopaths became a hot topic in American pop culture during the 1980s and 90s, with the gruesome exploits of real life monsters such as Ed Gein and Ted Bundy being adapted for the silver screen with films like Silence of the Lambs and Friday the 13th setting the foundations for the serial killer thriller. This glorified image of the intelligent psychopath, the social outlier that has risen above the laws of the average human, has risen to become a part of popular culture myths. Instead of fearing these figures of cold indifference like we should, we idolize and covet the power they wield. The psychopath has come to replace the vengeful gods of myth within our popular culture. Modern nihilism…
A psychopath is someone is has a mental disorder or display violent behaviors. A psychopath also has a personality order and loves to manipulate others, lacks empathy of others, emotionless, and fearless. There is nothing that scares them, there are four subtypes of psychopaths.…
Famous serial killers like Ed Gein and Ted Bundy have turned what we only believed to be true in movies and books, into a reality. Ed Gein, an American serial killer and body snatcher, took corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin. After police found body parts in his house in 1957, Gein confessed to killing two women. Nearly 14 years later, Ted Bundy, another American serial killer, committed rape, kidnap, and necrophilia, killing numerous young women and girls during the 1970s. There have been more recent cases of such unspeakable violence such as last year’s Aurora shootings. Inside a Colorado movie theater, a gunman, dressed in tactical clothing, set off tear gas and shot into the audience with multiple firearms, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others. Just a month ago, moments after killing his own mother, a young man fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in the town of Newtown, Connecticut. Psychopaths are people suffering from a chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior. Such people have devastating effects on our society, particularly through the most unimaginable crime. It is estimated that the prevalence of psychopathy is approximately 1% in the general population, but 15–25% in the USA adult prison population. Compared to prisoners without psychopathy, psychopathic prisoners have significantly higher rates of violent crime and recidivism (Koenigs, 2012). I can’t help but wonder what it is that acts as the driving force to lead someone to commit such unthinkable behavior. It’s important to understand the differences in psychopaths so we can begin to pinpoint the traits of a psychopath and make sense as to why such criminal behavior can be committed, most importantly psychopaths can teach us a lot about the nature of morality. “Inside the Mind of…
People enjoy watching Hannibal Lecter because it reflects a fear inside everyone, not necessarily that we might be murdered or eaten, but that we have no control over our lives. Hannibal Lecter is a physical manifestation of a fear that survives in the back of people’s minds, wary of the time when the luxury of having control over our lives is gone.…
I enjoyed the entire movie and I was really anxious to find out what would happen to Clarice since no one else could get through to Hannibal Lecter so that she could find out about the Buffalo Killer. This movie gave me much suspense to the storyline of Lecter and Buffalo Bill to the authorities pursuing him. I am a huge fan of the Hannibal “Cannibal” Lecter; he has done amazing work in…

Psychopathy (/saɪˈkɒpəθi/) (or sociopathy /ˈsoʊsiəˌpæθi/) is traditionally defined as a personality disorder characterized by enduring antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and disinhibited or bold behavior. The definition of psychopathy has varied significantly throughout the history of the concept; different definitions continue to be used that are only partly overlapping and sometimes appear contradictory.[1]…

Have you ever watched a movie and started to psychoanalysis the characters in the movie? In this movie we look specifically at Emily and Martin Taylor along with the complex relationships they are involved in. This obviously is a movie so some of it goes to far, but the conditions of the person can potentially be real symptoms. I was watching Side Effects, I began to understand the plot, symptoms, and reflection of the main characters.…
What is a psychopath? How would we describe a psychopath? Although people may have a different opinion of the description of a psychopath, there are some aspects that most people will agree on. From our understanding, psychopaths are impulsive, ego-centric, and sometimes violent individuals, who lie and manipulate others for their own personal gain. At the same time, psychopaths can be charming which explains how they manage to easily manipulate others. The most intriguing characteristic, however, is the lack of conscience within a psychopath. We can all agree, it seems as if psychopaths feel no remorse or guilt after exhibiting their…
In studies involving twins originally conducted by Minnesota Professor of Psychology Thomas Joseph Bouchard, Jr., it was found that genes play a large role in the fate of an individual. In their studies, it has shown that psychopathy is 60% hereditable (Brogard). Their research was done by monitoring genes for mutations over the years. As twins split of to become separate individuals, they must have similar DNA to begin with, and since many mutations occur after this separation, the original DNA must be hereditarily responsible for such behaviors (Brogard). A recent study at the University of Wisconsin showed that these serial killers have a slightly detached amygdala, as it has few connections to the rest of the brain than do sadistic people (Brogard).…
