The characters of Othello and Iago are tangled in the deception between love and hate. Othello comes to Venice to lead them against the Turks. Othello and Iago are both military men with strong fighting abilities however; they are not fighting the same battles. Othello falls in love with a beautiful lady and Iago falls in love with the idea of becoming lieutenant in the military. However, Iago does not become lieutenant and he is angry. Therefore, Iago sets out to destroy Othello by creating deceptions of lies about Othello’s wife. Iago manipulates Othello in believing his wife is unfaithful to him. They both are at war with their emotions of jealousy, love and character values. Othello and Iago are similar as they are men who are fearless and assertive, and they both are overcome by their desire of revenge, yet the are different to the core of their character values. Iago is fearless when planning the revenge against Othello. Iago is fearless as he convinces Othello that his marriage is not what it seems. Iago is assertive in the planning of murder against his fellow military men as he confronts them about Othello’s plan to make someone else lieutenant. Othello is fearless when he is called to duty against the Turks. Othello is called to this country, a black man, to fight for them against the unknown country. Othello is also assertive when he thinks that his wife may be unfaithful to him.
