He graduated from Sam Houston State and enlisted as soon as he got out. Luttrell is the Lone Survivor he lived through the whole entire situation and knows first hand how to use his skills to survive in a situation like he was in. Now Hampton Sides is a different story he was born in Memphis Tennessee in 1962. Sides grew up in a wealthy family and got a degree at Yale and now is a professor at Colorado College and San Diego State university. These authors are very different from each other but both use remarkable true stories on how people survive in the worst of situations. The book Lone Survivor is about four navy SEALS who go on a recon mission in the mountains of Afghanistan to find members and leaders of a small evil group linked to the taliban group. These four men were Marcus Luttrell, Mike Murphy, Danny Dietz, and Matthew Axelson know as Axe. These four men were conducted to perform operation Red Wing which was the recon mission but they were told if they spot a man by the name of Ahmad Shah they could take action and execute. America’s conflict started in WWII as the Japanese bombed pearl harbor. That is when America joined the war and focused on the enemy of Japan. The Japanese were fighting us but were also trying to take over the Philippine islands and they were successful in doing so. As this happened there were many American navy troops that were unable to escape from the Philippines and were now prisoners of war and prisoners of Japan. As America was moving in on the Japanese in the Philippine islands they were Americans were worried that the Japanese would massacre the five hundred american prisoners that were being held against their will. As the Americans got closer the Japanese ordered a mass evacuation and let the prisons through rough terrain, bad weather, insufficient medicine and no food which resulted in many American and Filipino casualties. This evacuation is now known as the Bataan death march. (Quote) The prisoners that survived the death march were then transferred to a smaller camp known as Cabanatuan right outside of Cabanatuan City. The camp was a slave force for the Japanese military so they did not provide the prisoners with medicine and food. The prisoners in this prison showed to true grit and determination to keep themselves alive. It takes a lot for them not to just give up and die because they are going through hell but they fight for their lives and they stay alive
