Dee is a beautiful, curvy woman that is very confident in herself and knows what she wants. The mom compare her to Maggie and stated that “Dee is lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure”. Her presence is felt wherever she goes. The thought of her older sister left her unsettled. The mother claimed “Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs”. She never moved with purpose unlike her sister, her mother even compared her to a dog that got hit by a car. She wasn’t as bright as her sister, either. The mother said “Maggie reads to me. She stumbles along good naturally but can't see well. She knows she is not bright”. The mom doesn’t have many positive things to say about Maggie. She constantly compared the two and how Dee was better.
Mom loved both of her daughters but she never had the complete package. While Dee was beautiful and ambitious, she forgot where she came from. Also, Maggie was true to her heritage but lacked a great deal of confidence.
Overall, the mother has two daughters that are opposites. Maggie being quiet, traditional, and insecure. And Dee who is beautiful, confident but not true to herself. Although she compared both of them, she loved the both of
