Pictures without words means nothing. Errol Morris is asking in “Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire” if pictures provide evidence and if so is it true or false? The writer presents a picture of a ship stripped of a caption and leaving it meaningless. Morris then adds the caption, which is the ships name, but then asks about more details embedding with the photo. Morris uses the age of the photo as a factor in identifying it and states that it needs caption to give it context to produce facts.…

While reading this story, not only does the author go into good detail but she adds onto the affect of the the story by adding in photos. She puts captions on them like she did for the photo of Louie at his plane that he barely survived in with 954 bullet holes; she captioned “Louie at the Super Man on the day after Nauru” (Hillenbrand 115). She evens goes far enough to include pictures of not only Louie but of his friends, Japanese camp officials (who treated POW’s poorly), and even some of Louie and his friends after the war, when they were safely home, with their families, living a better…
In the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries of America, many settlers and colonists were taken captive by the Native Americans, commonly known as Indians. The Native Americans had many reasons and motives for capturing the settlers or colonists. Captives were often taken to be traded, ransomed, or “adopted,” which Native Americans did to replace tribal members who had passed or who had been killed. Two very famous captivity narratives are those of James Smith and Mary Rowlandson, whose stories are very different due to their captors, gender, and religion.…
For this situation, a photo (as a guide with quantitative information) was without a doubt worth a thousand words and spared numerous a huge number of lives (Johnson, 2006). This is more than the account of an extraordinary guide, in any case. It handles bigger issues, for example, how new thoughts and exploratory disclosures get to be embraced, frequently against incredible resistance, even from the intelligent people of the day. John Snow and Henry Whitehead are incredible good examples though of us who could not care less about finding and conveying reality, notwithstanding when it is…
“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”(Albert Schweitzer) In both of the novels Les Miserables and Jane Eyre, there were characters who sparked ideas and philosophies for the other characters in the story as well as the reader. In Jane Eyre, one of the most influential characters in the whole stories was Helen Burns, and in Les Miserables an important central character is that of Cosette. These two supporting characters have a variety of similarities. Helen Burns and Cosette are similar in that they are a bright light to those around them, optimistic through whatever life throws their way, and both had a difficult childhood.…
Donald Trump Extinguished DACA which caused the removal of education, employment and opportunity for the "dreamers"; Young immigrants were brought to America for political, economic and social freedom. Furthermore, Elizabeth Redden states that is "creates great uncertainty for the roughly 800,000 young people currently enrolled. According to her statement, the removal of the safety blanket(DACA) for young immigrants ignited a deadly flame that could potentially destroy the future in America. To represent Hector Barrett's point of view by supporting Redden, "to exploit immigration as a political wedge issue...would be both bad government and bad politics...The winding down of DACA is the perfect time for Congress to develop effective, compassionate…
While photojournalists should take pictures unplanned, many are starting to take staged photographs, and it is becoming a serious ethical dilemma. As viewers of photojournalists’ work, we want to see the truth. We want to see real life accounts of what is going on in the world. Pictures are supposed to be worth a thousand words, but if photographs continue to be staged as they are being staged now, we will need words to accurately know what is going on. Dorothea Lange’s photograph of “Migrant Mother” was a somewhat accurate depiction of what was happening at the time. However, the picture that was so publicized was not necessarily “real life”. The “cover shot” we see that Lange took was much less impactful than the photograph that she took staged of the family. So why stage photos? In this case, Lange wanted to show how dramatic and hard times were for people in the depression and drought. Staging the photo made this happen, even if it omitted some of the real life to it. For example, Thompson’s oldest daughter was not included in the picture, because people react stronger to younger children.…
The education of James Mcbride and Ruth have had a well education, has many similarities and differences. In their lives they both had to deal with racism or some sort of public hatred. Ruth who was a Jewish girl in the South was not accept by the other whites. at all times she could see people stare at her “with hate in their eyes” (McBride 80). Additionally, James was ridiculed for being black in a white school so much he often tried to “escape from painful reality” (90). At their schools, they are different from the majority and are hated for it. Neither were ever truly accepted by their peers. Secondly, they both have parents who pushed for them to have an education. Ruth’s parents and James’ mom, Ruth, “raised their children…
Remembering information as it is, is always challenging for people. It is in human nature to remember only good stuff and make information inaccurate, and forget everything bad that was in life. For example no matter what kind of childhood you had, looking back in time you will still remember all the happy moments, while everything negative will fade away. Because of this special characteristic of people, photos can be irreplaceable. Because no matter if the moment recorded on the photo brings positive or negative emotions it stays the same, it will always show everything as it was without changing any perspectives. Torie DeGette in her essay “War Photo No One Would Publish” expands her main idea that sometimes governments or even the people…
There are many great works of literature that can be compared and contrasted due to their vast similarities, yet strikingly differences. Katherine Anne Porter 's “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” and William Faulkner 's “A Rose for Emily” can also be compared and contrasted. There are many characteristics to each story that are similar to each other including the subject, setting, and year of publication, but what makes each story differ greatly are the main characters. Ellen Weatherall from “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” and Emily Grierson from “A Rose for Emily” have similar, yet different personalities which allow them to handle their similar situations differently.…

Summary: In Nora Ephron’s essay, The Boston Photographs, Ephron talks about three pictures that were taken in Boston outside of an apartment. The first picture is of a fireman, a woman, and her child standing on a fire escape as the building behind them is on fire. The second photo is of the fire escape breaking from the building, and the third picture is of the woman and child falling from the building. Ephron describes in her essay the negative response the editor’s received from the public about publishing these pictures in newspapers across the nation. She feels that these pictures deserve to be printed and are a perfect example of how photojournalism is often more powerful than written journalism. She also argues that the press tends to only print the good news so it would only be realistic for the press to show the unfortunate news as well. In the actual story of the woman and child, the woman died on impact but the child lived because he landed on top of the mother. Ephron also argues that if the both the woman and child would have survived then the public wouldn’t have any complaints about the photos. It is the fact that she died that some say her privacy of death was unfairly taken away from her. Ephron feels that if people are dying in the world everyday then it shouldn’t be that big of a deal for the public to see pictures similar to the ones in this essay.…
Thompson believes the audience has an immense role in literacy while Perl claims the audience makes the last finding in a photograph. Through this, the audience is privileged to critique on their work because without them everything would be bogus. You need an audience in order to revise your writing because you need feedback to enhance your work for publicity. You need an audience to complete a scenario in a photograph not just by looking at the 2-D form in a photograph but by looking at it through every dimension. Both Perl and Thompson present their ideas with detailed and supported ideas to attract the reader’s attention by connecting their train of thought. They both exemplify real research examples that augment the main idea. This helps the reader understand their final thoughts. From my perspective, I can relate to being a teenager and writing formal for a school paper or changing the format when I write letters to my boyfriend in the USMC. As for viewing a photograph, I tend to believe every expression, place, person shown in a picture. From now on I will see photographs in a different way to discover the truth behind what is not…
