A trip to the ocean can be a relaxing escape from the everyday pressures of life. A sailboat glistening on the horizon provides a mental escape to faraway places. The rhythm of the ocean beating against the sand is sedating music to a troubled mind. A slow, gentle breeze can relax your tensions. You should always be careful to avoid overexposure to the sun at the beach.…
The British colonies in the Chesapeake, southern Atlantic and West Indies changed continuously throughout the seventeenth century. One way that they had changed was not only basing more of their economy on agriculture but incorporating more slave labor into the colony lifestyles as well. In 1612, a tobacco rush swept through Virginia with a rising demand for the crop, while at the same time, the demand for sugar cane in the West Indies began to grow. With constant demands for these crops and more land needing tending to, slave labor was soon incorporated into the lifestyles of the colonies. In 1650 Virginia, slaves, “…made up approximately 14 percent of the colony’s population” (33) and were at a ratio of four to one in the West Indies. Many…

Ocean City and the Outer Banks are two vacation spots that many people enjoy for different reasons. Both beaches draw in thousands of tourists to their shores every year. However, instead of calling it the Outer Banks, some may call it "the graveyard of the Atlantic." Writer Anne Siddons states, "On the Outer Banks of North Carolina there is a legend about the ships that have come to grief in the great autumn storms off those hungry shoals. Over the centuries there have been many; the Banks have more than earned their reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic." (Siddons, 1). Ocean City does not have another name and is not historically known for anything as ominous.…

Jane Addams (September 6, 1860 - May 21, 1935) was a pioneer settlement social worker, public philosopher, sociologist, author, and leader in women's suffrage and world peace. In an era when presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilsonidentified themselves as reformers and social activists, Adams was one of the most prominent[1] reformers of the Progressive Era. She helped turn the US to issues of concern to mothers, such as the needs of children, public health, and world peace. She said that if women were to be responsible for cleaning up their communities and making them better places to live, they needed the vote to be effective in doing so. Addams became a role model for middle-class women who volunteered to uplift their communities. She is increasingly being recognized as a member of the American pragmatist school of philosophy.[2] In 1931 she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and is recognized as the "father" of the social work profession in the United States.…

The first few steps after the boardwalk may feel rather rocky due to scattered sediments and tiny pebbles sticking on to the soles of your feet, but by halfway to the ocean, it starts getting smooth and cooler with every step you take. If laying around and catching some ray is not your type of fun, there are beach volleyball courts set up, kites to be flown here and safe swimming with lifeguards on the look out. Gazing at the sandy shore, you can see the roaring waves rushing in, toppling forts and castles made out of silken sands that shimmers under the blazing sun like tiny luminous stars in the night sky. Take advantage of this peaceful, quiet moment by standing on the shoreline and wait for the rolling ocean water slide by the ankles of your leg. As the waves try to pull back in, you will feel a sinking sensation on the heels of your foot due to the pressure of your weight and the surrounding sand. Lastly, there is an area for youths with a big, plastic palm tree set up in the middle and tiny sprinklers around it, spraying cold, chilling drops that can be felt even to the people strolling on the boardwalk. The beach is always crowded with families and couples to enjoy on their days off and especially on Friday nights, gorgeous firework shoot off can be seen starting at 9:30p.m. (Only during the summer…
Hanford, California. You know you’ve entered the San Joaquin Valley once the scent of cow manure wakes you up from your nap in the car while you’re on your way to the tourist city of Los Angeles. All around the world, Los Angeles attracts tourists for its image of the film industry, its equivocal Hollywood sign and constant weather of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If not LA, then San Francisco, which is located in northern California, comes next to mind. San Francisco is known for its Golden Gate Bridge and technological savvy. Curious, you peek out your car window and automatically start to question whether you’re going in the right direction. You find yourself surrounded by green and fields filled with groups of Holstein and Jersey cows, endless…
New York City VS Miami Although both cities are big, there's nothing else in the world that makes me feel more at home. New York City and Miami, FL have both been the only to cities that I have been back and forth with. Usually for the summer or whenever I have school I stay in Miami, but then when it comes to the fall or winter season, I take a nice trip to New York City. Picking between the two would only cause for me to lie about my answer because I love both places.…
In a country the size of the United States of America, there will always be considerable debate when it comes to which Coast is the most appealing in terms of lifestyle, beauty, climate, food, and time zone, the East Coast or the West “Best” Coast. While there are always pros and cons to each Coast, when they are put up against each other, clearly the West is the Best. Despite each region having their differences, they both have some similarities as well. A person can go watch a baseball game on Saturday and a football game on Sunday both on the East and the West Coast. One could also go to the beach or go to a concert on either Coast. These similarities do not outweigh the many differences there are between the West Coast and the East Coast. When it comes to making the right decision, the West Coast is the Best Coast because of all it has to offer; the weather, the people,…
