In O Brother Where Art Thou and Homer’s Odyssey the use of epic themes did not always parallel one another. The personality of the characters in the movie greatly affected whether the Greek’s upstanding views portrayed in the themes, such as loyalty, differed from the epic poem. In a comparable sense, the plots influenced whether the themes, like the homecoming, were similar in the movie and poem. However, the movie is by no means directly based upon the epic poem; you simply cannot view either without perceiving the connection between the uses of epic themes.
The most plainly seen similarity between our epic hero and soggy bottom boy would be their limitless vanity in their beauty. The theme of beauty is apparent in Ulysses’ action of incessantly wearing a hairnet to bed and his stubborn obsession with Dapper Dan hair pomade. Throughout the Odyssey Odysseus is perpetually being depicted as a beautiful man, so beautiful that his son mistakes him for a glorious god. Another similar epic theme would have to be the long awaited homecoming. Both Odysseus and Ulysses have to face many obstacles and antagonistic characters until they are finally reunited with their loved ones in their homeland. After returning home, Penelope was still loyal sweetness of loyalty was still waiting for Odysseus even after 20 years, though the same cannot be said for poor Ulysses.
The most prominent difference in epic themes would have to be the loyalty between characters. Neither Penelope nor her son take the easy way out and bend to the will of the suitors but instead continue to believe the Odysseus is in fact alive and will return to Ithica. Penny on the other hand divorces Ulysses, tells the children he’s dead, and plans to marry another man after only a short time ( Of course she changes her mind when she knows that he is part of the famous Soggy Bottom Boys). Another theme that simply does not match both would have to be the fate of
