In the play Ellemeno Pea, Simone introduces her currently dead-ended sister to her life of luxury working as a sort of babysitter for obnoxiously wealthy people. Her boss, Michaela, interrupts their sisters-only weekend with marital (and superficial soap related) woes, fearing a divorce from her husband Peter, and Simone’s new idiotic beau Ethan also stops by. In the end, Devon gains some perspective on Michaela and Simone—and Ethan and Simone go away together.…
Zeena’s appearance, although she isn’t the prettiest to begin with, the harsh winters completely draw out her worst features. This ties together another reason why Ethan doesn’t really want to be with her and rather be with Mattie who brightens the winter.…
wonderful- I've seen that myself. But sometimes the two of them get going at each other, and then Ethan's face'd break your heart... When I see that, I think it's him that suffers most... anyhow” (Wharton 140)…
Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome, juxtaposes the treatment and attention Ethan directs to Zeena and Mattie. The different treatment between the two further reveals Ethan’s internal selfish thoughts to be with Mattie. As Ethan and Mattie have more interactions and time to themselves, “The grow of passion he had felt for her had melted into an aching tenderness” (Wharton 85). Ethan’s selfishness is the antagonist of Ethan and Zeena’s marriage, and it acts as a barrier to the struggle between his affection for Mattie and his existing relationship. Although Ethan’s selfish desires to be with Mattie are shameful, he stoops to beyond a level of inconceivable selfishness, and schemes to flee Starkfield in order to escape Zeena to forever…
Mattie made him want to follow his dreams while Zeena no longer brought happiness and passion into their marriage. This is shown when Zeena “ [gathered] up the bits of broken glass she went out of the room as if she carried a dead body..."(Wharton 66). When Ethan and Mattie were having a romantic dinner, their cat knocked over and shattered Zeena’s pickledish that was a wedding gift from her aunt. The shattering of this dish symbolized the death and shattering of their marriage and love. The red symbolizes the passion that they both once had for eachother. That broken dish symbolized the end of their lives together. It foreshadowed that something would end between Ethan and Zeena. It could have even meant that something else would shatter just like Mattie and Ethan’s sled accident. Passion can make both fortunate and unfortunate things happen in…
Zeena Frome is a hateful, ill-tempered woman who does not appreciate the people who care for her during her illnesses. She is “sick” constantly, and she does not have the strength to take care of herself. Mattie came to Starkfield to be Zeena’s caretaker. The whole…
By denying Zeena a single positive attribute while presenting Mattie as the epitome of glowing, youthful attractiveness, Wharton renders Ethan’s desire to cheat on his wife perfectly understandable. The conflict does not stem from within Ethan’s own heart—his feelings for Mattie never waver. Instead, the conflict occurs between his passions and the constraints placed on him by society, which control his conscience and impede his fulfillment of his…

The use of lighting, color, shots, and angles all work to create a distinct visual style that changes as the story does. The movie constantly shifts colors and levels of brightness from scene to scene in a way that visually conveys Alike’s progression as a character. As the environments and colors change, so too does Alike. In her first poem that we see her read in class, she compares herself to a butterfly imprisoned by its own cocoon. “Cramped in the darkness of the too-tight cocoon of its own creation.” Mirroring this, the film starts in the previously mentioned women’s club with extreme-closeups and incredibly tight shots of Alike and the other patrons. The lighting is very dim, and the shots are filled with hot purples and pinks colors. Alike never outright states in dialogue how she is feeling…
Beauty, written by Jane Martin in the mid nineteen hundreds, is an ironic play about two successful women, Bethany and Carla. Both women were the same age yet complete opposites. They also had completely different personalities and were unhappy with their lives. Martin casted and characterized them this way to illustrate a few themes. The drama was mainly centered on the theme that no one is ever happy unless they get their wishes granted. However, in these two women’s cases, getting what they wanted caused them to realize there is nothing wrong with being different. These two themes can be seen through the two character’s success, jealousy, and a genie.…
At a young age, women have a tendency to be naïve and innocent. With that, the two factors create a vulnerable persona in a girl, and it compels a person to feel sympathy towards them. “How I Met My Husband” consists of a protagonist, Edie, who is also naïve and innocent as well as humble and simple. These traits convince me to believe her to be a sympathetic character in the story.…
It shows us the cruel things we do to ourselves just to fit into society. If we don’t look as the society pleases then kids get bullied just like Georgiana in The Birthmark. She is one of the most beautiful women…

We also cannot overlook how Lindsay Lohan did an excellent job of portraying these seemingly identical yet very different girls. The characteristics of the girls and the situation going on in the film (girls pretending to be each other and going back as the other to their parents) gave the young actress a challenge as to whether she could adapt to such an in-depth role or more appropriately, role’s’.…
