West Virginia and living in multiple tiny towns it’s hard to make friends and keep those friends. On their journey around America the children learn the value of money and how important it is. Learning how carless and selfish their parent’s actions are, they learned how to be independent and take care of themselves. In the end her parents aren’t so…kind of.
Money plays in everything. Everyday life to spending it on luxury’s like Chocolate or the movies. It plays a big part in the glass castle because from the start they have always been “low” on money but when Rex wins it big in Las Vegas he spoils the kids with little souvenirs’ and big meals that they are usually not used of. But the children get a real sense of how money works when they are older in Welch, West Virginia.
Jeannette’s first with money was when her mother had to go to Charleston for college classes. As Jeannette say’s “Before mom left, she gave me two hundred dollars. That was plenty, she said, to buy food for Brian and Maureen, and me for two months and pay the water and electricity bills. I did the math. It came out to twenty five dollars a week, or little over three-fifty a day. I worked up a budget and calculated that we could indeed squeak by if I made extra money babysitting.
