Peeta vs. Katniss in the Hunger Games A writer creates all kinds of characters, each with their own personality. Some may compare easily, or perhaps be very different from one another. In the book the Hunger Games, all the characters differentiate themselves from each other, yet they still share some likeness to one another. Katniss Everdeen, a dark-haired, brown-eyed teen, goes against 23 other teenagers in an arena, fighting to the death. Among those 23 other tributes is a boy from her district, Peeta Mellark. Peeta and Katniss display differences and similarities throughout three major points in the story including before and during the reaping, the interview before the games, and the official hunger games. Throughout Peeta and Katniss’ life before and during the reaping, they appear different in many ways, yet still connected in others. Peeta is a kind and compassionate person. In the beginning of the story, he sees Katniss starving in the streets. He gives her bread to feed her family. Katniss, however, has a difficult time showing love and kindness. Before she leaves for the hunger games, she has a chance to say goodbye to her distant mother. Instead of showing comfort, Katniss speaks harshly to her. Peeta and Katniss also live different life styles. Peeta’s family owns a bakery, making his family middle-class. He works there painting cakes. He has a father to take care of him. Katniss, on the other hand, has grown up very poor. With her father now dead, she has to hunt to put food on their table. Peeta expresses his emotions clearly when chosen for the reaping. Katniss sees his face among the hundreds of televisions. He appears tear-stained, not bothering to wipe them away. Katniss, no matter how afraid she is inside, refuses to show her feeling to the audience. When glancing at her reflection, she’s pleased to appear blank, even bored. Despite all the differences between Peeta and Katniss in the beginning of the story, they share a few similarities.
