The pilgrims left their hometown, so that they could have their religious beliefs freely. The pilgrims and a woman named Sahara, who traveled from Somalia to Slovakia, have some similarities and differences in their refugee story. Today in the 21st century there are countless refugee’s,people that were forced to leave their country in order to escape war,persecution, or natural disasters.
The pilgrims were a part of a faction called Separatists; they had left the Church of England to create their own denominations. In Plymouth Colony, the pilgrims were set to persecution for following this practice. The pilgrims, on the Mayflower, had to flee to an area then called Cape Cod. During the first few days with the indians, relations were difficult. The indians and the pilgrims were fighting with arms and arrows. The pilgrims met an Indian who decided to help them , because they were dying from weather conditions and scurvy, if they followed a few rules. They helped each other out and survived together. On the other hand, Sahara was completely alone after her grandmother passed away. She acquired a job which helped her take care of herself but met a man and fell in love. They moved to a decent house in Yemen where more job opportunities were available. She was pregnant with their fourth child when her husband left. She was alone again with four children. For the safety and well being of herself and kids she asked UNHCR for help and they gave her resettlement. She is now on the path to a better life.
The pilgrims had similarities and differences to Sahara’s refugee story. With complications along the way, they both ended up with a better life than what they had at first. Sahara and The pilgrims story will always be
