In Vincent van Gogh’s painting it can be appreciated the few combinations of colors he used. He basically made used of black, blue, yellow, and white. However, he was able to make a great contrast. For example, he contrasted fairly well in the dark sky toward the bright moon and stars. Additionally, he used mostly organic shapes. On the other hand, in Henri Matisse’s painting, it can be appreciated a greater variation of contrasting colors. As an illustration, he placed a yellow flower base which contrasts with the surrounding red and blue items. Furthermore, he does not only used organic shapes. In fact, he made a great contrast between organic shapes on the woman’s body and geometric shapes on the background.
Overall, The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh and the Reclining Nude by Henri Matisse are extraordinary pieces which can be compared and contrasted. These two artworks are excellent examples of how it is possible to find similitudes and differences even though they are from different authors or from a different period of time.
