He is interested in you in part because van Ruijven is.” Considering that Pieter the son keeps looking for her, and van Ruijven has an obsession with has caused him to believe that she someone resembles that image. In the other hand, I think Griet has come to notice that she deserves better. On page, 169 Griet describes the painting as, "a picture of three people--a woman playing a lute, wearing a dress that revealed much of her bosom, a gentleman with his arm around her, and an old woman. The man was buying the young woman's favors, the old woman reaching to take the coin he held out.” Considering the fact that a Procuress is a woman who prostitutes, at the end of the book the painting is suppose to signify how Griet is the total opposite of what the painting symbolizes. Van Ruijven wants Vermeer to paint him with Griet so that he can attempt to seduce her the way he did a previous maid. Maria Thins was able to suggest to him another painting that appealed to him just as much as the painting he had in…
In 1673, Father Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, and Louis Joliet, a fur trader, undertook an expedition to explore the unsettled territory in North America from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf of Mexico for the colonial power of France. Leaving with several men in two bark canoes, Marquette and Joliet entered the Mississippi River and arrived in present-day Arkansas in June 1673. They were considered the first Europeans to come into contact with the Indians of east Arkansas since Hernando de Soto’s expedition in the 1540s. The goal given Marquette, Joliet, and their men was to document, for French and Canadian officials, an area that had been largely unknown until the late seventeenth century.…
There a multiple similarities between these two highly talented artists. The major similarity that stuck out to me is that they are both show how our world has changed. Tomorrow’s shows the devastation 9/11 caused on our country. 9/11 has made citizens realize that terrorist attacks are serious. Also, our security has update trying to not allow certain people on airplanes. Shikoh’s pieces described how fast food and technology is progressing in the United States. The fast food and technology has brought our county pro’s and con’s. Another similarity between these two artists’ work is the vibrant colors used. Many…

Impressionism influenced the emergence of Postimpressionism which was similar to its predecessor still being of everyday outdoor scenes and artists expressed themselves freely in the art. (Sporre, 2009) However, artists of this period completely rejected the objective naturalism using color and form in more personal ways expressing a person view of the visual world. (Impressionism, 2000) Post-Impressionist artists deviated from Impressism due to the fact they did not care if the work was a visual experience as Edouard Manet did, they merely expressed themselves through the use of bright colors. One of the more famous artists of this period was Vincent van Gogh who may have been one of the most…
One of the differences is that The Venus of Willendorf was created out of a yellow limestone as well as tinted red by traces of ochre. The Venus of Laussel was carved onto a limestone block. A similarity is that both sculptures were made out of some type of limestone. Both masterpieces consist of an overweight woman with large breasts, as well as a head with no facial features. The head on the Venus of Willendorf is almost completely covered by a braided pattern. The head on the Venus of Laussel is unclear or decayed and has what looks to be long hair. Another difference is that the overweight woman in the Venus of Laussel has her left hand on her belly, making me think she may be pregnant. It is fascinating to look at the differences and similarities of both sculptures, it makes me wonder how similar the artists…
Bartram and Freneau were inspired by God’s creations of ineffable beauty in nature. They devoted their lives to the appreciation of even the minutest details of God’s work at hand.…
- I chose the work of art of Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun. The artwork was called Marie-Antoinette and Her Children, which was painted in the year of 1787 with the medium of oil on canvas. This painting took place in Palace of Versailles in the country France. In comparison, I chose the composer Jean-Philippe Rameau and his selected work called Trait. This era had a main focus on Queens and Kings and it is known to be “The Age of Kings” (pg. 388). This also had significance with the settlement of three important countries and they were Dutch, the English, and the French. In both picture and music I can tell that there is a similarity because they share the same nationalities and it is brought out through painting and music. In the painting it has a focal point on the…
The paintings “The Lifeline” by Winslow Homer and “Prairie on Fire” by Charles Deas are two paintings that really struck out to me as similar. I think Homer’s painting, “The Lifeline”, is a very dramatic painting because of how the lady is just laying there passed out while this brave man is swinging across dangerous waves and rocks to get them to safety. Its very different from looking at in class because you can actually see the texture and brush strokes the artist used. When standing in front of a painting, it almost feels like your there watching this happen. You can see all the different details from the small brush strokes to the large ones, and the effect of light almost makes them look like they are glistening. I selected Charles Deas painting to compare to Homer’s painting because in both paintings a woman is passed out and is…
While both these works of art are vastly different, they both showcase the height of both of these civilizations. In the “Woman at the fountain” the artist sticks to a “dry” tone within the paint, with the main colors being brown and white. In the “Battle Of Centaurs and Wild Beasts”, you can…
St. Jerome in his study and the Arnofini wedding are two very famous masterpieces, both were created in the early renaissance, when art was flourishing in new life. Despite both art works being created around the same time frame they were fashioned very differently, Jan Van Eyck the Arnofini Wedding was an oil painting while St. Jerome in his study by Albrecht Drer was engraved into a slat of wood then stamped onto a canvas. Although crafted differently they both have microscopic details and both have a great deal of symbolism hidden in them. There is a massive amount of symbolism in the arnolfini wedding however some of the most interesting things are the small mirror in the back round. If the observer looks carefully at the mirror he/she can see that a mirror image was painted in it and bordering the mirror is the cycle or Christ.…

The first painting I will contrast is the most famous Starry Night by the most vnoted Van Gogh although the reason of not denying the popularity of Starry Night, it's also interesting to bring to mind that there is very little known about Vincent's own feelings toward his work. As studies read Vincent would often discuss specific works in great detail, but not so in the case of Starry Night. As it yet difficult to say, due to him not expressing the strong feelings for the famous painting…
Philosophers have been studying this question for hundreds of years. Hobbes, Rousseau, Locke, Montesquieu and others all have very different ideas of how humanity should organize their government based on the nature of man. Some of those ideals have transferred over into modern societies that are prominent in our world today, while others have kicked the bucket alike their creators. The nature of man can be defined as many things weather it is that man is either good or bad, or something more complicated; Human beings are egocentric and self-interested, so therefore life in the state of nature is short and brutish. The nature of man is much more complicated though and can be defined with an ample meeker broader statement. Baron de Montesquieu believes that all of mankind is born equal. It can be said that this doesn’t define the true nature of human beings, but this transfers into the most common and dominant type of government today which is democracy. Baron de Montesquieu’s ideals most directly translate into a fair and democratic government, and because of this humanity should organize their government in this fashion.…
One of the things that differentiate Egyptian art to Renaissance art is that Renaissance art uses realism. Their paintings include drawing of people in a realistic way. The people in Egyptian art do not exactly look how a real person would look today. Below, is a renaissance style portrait of Raphael Sanzio compared to an Egyptian painting of the pharaoh. What they both have in common is…
