A girl from Rexdale is exposed to a harsh environment where the gift of life is often tenuous. She is exposed to tragedies and failures which become embedded into her life. These factors compound daily and deeply influence how she views herself. But there is something in her that holds onto hope, and trusts in her gifts.
A few miles away, a boy is growing up in Rosedale, a wealthy neighbourhood, which thrives on the motto “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” His situation may not be perfect, but he is told that he can accomplish anything, regardless of any obstacles that befall him. Each individual has vastly different ideas of what opportunity is. This is reality.
Opportunities for youth in low-income neighbourhoods are issues I care about deeply. I am passionate about it because I have lived it. I know how it feels to constantly push yourself to ignore voices of doubt and self-destruction.
Part of growing up in such neighbourhoods is that one's environment feels isolated from the rest of the world. Opportunities such as travel, the latest technology, or even role models in the family are often rare.

My vision for the conference was for everything to be student led, which meant the planning and execution of the conference/workshops were done by students. The city-wide conference in November 2016, was created to provide an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, but also acknowledge the challenges that black youth face daily. I founded Black Brilliance to provide a safe space for youth to discuss issues of race, classism, and representation. We brought these issues back to the forefront of community consciousness, as they are issues that are real and relevant to black and low-income youth today.
