Compare And Contrast Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is a timeless tale with many interpretations. Three of our favorites at, The Years- Freshman Edition, is the original play by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (1996) directed by the esteemed Baz Luhrmann, and the graphic novel illustrated by Will Volley and Jim Devlin. Though it is the same classic story, each adaption is unique in their own ways. Each artist created a totally original creation, from one original piece. Our editors decided to do some research to discover why these authors, producers, and artists expressed this classic tale the way they did. Just like every great journey, every tale has a beginning; which is where we will start ours. William Shakespeare published his play, Romeo and Juliet, in the year 1597. The play that we now know was originally adapted from "The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet". Shakespeare wrote this play in blank verse poetry, for those of us who aren't familiar with poetry terms, that means it is unrhymed poetry with regular metrical lines. Blank verse was very common during the 16th century England. Romances, like Romeo and Juliet, were also very prominent. Since this was the popular style of writing, that might explain why Shakespeare wrote the play in such a fashion. …show more content…
When Lurhman adapted this classic piece, he tried to put a modern spin on it. To help make the story more modern he changed the setting of Verona to Verona Beach. Instead of using the long swords that Shakespeare described, the characters used guns. The two feuding families also owned large feuding businesses. These changes were added to make younger audiences relate to the story, and to help them understand what was happening. Although Luhrman made many changes to the play, all of the wording was the same. For many, the new adaptions in the film made the story a lot easier to see and also

    Lurhmann has made a film that is like a modern drama in the way that strange camera angles and movements are used, also there are numerous small adaptations and changes to the script. Both films are a tragedy type film because people die, there is fighting and despair, and two of the main characters die during the fight scene and two more die at the end of the play.     The essential visual differences in the film prove to be complete opposites. The 1968 version by Franco Zeffirelli, depicts a traditional Romeo and Juliet. There was nothing visually stunning about the accustomed Renaissance setting that was doused in neutral colors. Costuming was accurate and conventional for the time. In general this adaptation stays truer to the way Shakespeare had intended. In the 1996 version by Baz Luhrmann, the story of Romeo and Juliet is portrayed with a modern day twist. The setting is a beach city where cars and buildings are vibrant with color. Costumes were updated with Hawaiian print shirts and casual styled dresses.
