receive certain rights for the financial assistance. Last but not least was President Wilson’s policy, Moral Diplomacy. His idea was that it was the United States’ moral duty to establish democratic governments in Latin America.
President Roosevelt used his policy to help Panama to fight for their freedom from Columbia in exchange for land rights to create the Panama Canal. Taft used his policy to pay of European loans for Latin America in exchange for certain rights. Wilson used his policy to create democratic governments in Haiti and The Dominican Republic.
Out of these three foreign policies, Roosevelt’s was the most effective and positive for the United States. His policy politically affected the United States in a positive way by helping the Panamanians fight for their independence from Columbia. For helping the Panamanians fight for their freedom, Roosevelt asked for a land claim so he could create the Panama Canal. This canal was geographically positive and economically positive. It allowed for ships to make a much less dangerous and timelier trip from the East coast to the West coast. Also that canal created many new trade opportunities, which in the end helped out the economies of Panama and the United States.
In conclusion, there have been multiple foreign policies dealing with the Latin Americas. But the best one was Roosevelt’s Big Stick Diplomacy, where European countries could not touch Latin American countries while the US could involve itself in Latin American affairs. This policy was the most effective and positive for the US.
