members. These gangs are more likely to be found in poverty neighborhoods. These gangs act in criminal behavior such as in stealing, drug dealing/drug use, and violence. Problems in the lower class is the culture of poverty such as child poverty, minority group poverty, and crime. violent behaviors increase as income decreases. Disadvantaged economic class position is a primary cause of crime. Poor children are most likely to commit crime and effect their behaviors. “Poverty is the mother of crime” said by Marcus Aurelis. Poverty, residential instability and ethnic heterogeneity are the 3 qualities that get in the way of the ability of a neighborhood to maintain social organization which increases the chance for crime. The theory suggests that the reasoning is the persons characteristics such as race, gender, and residential location.
In the show Cops the police patrol the streets for drug dealers, car thieves, violent criminals and so on.
They pick the neighborhoods that have a lot of poverty in it because more poverty has been proven to have more crime. An example of a disorganized community Shaw and McKay did research on a neighborhood in Chicago. What they saw in these neighborhoods was people living in disadvantaged neighborhoods were not getting the same amount of opportunities to succeed, a lot of immigration in poor neighborhoods, poor stores that fit the neighborhood, and disadvantaged neighborhoods led to a development of criminal activities. Shaw and McKay gave this area nine zones for crime rates. It was proven that most crime was committed in inner city zones(had the most poverty). This study went on for sixty-five years. A choice people have to make in these poor neighborhoods was to have a deviant lifestyle or an uneasy lifestyle. The deviant lifestyles included drug dealers, pimps, and gamblers. These deviant lifestyle members were considered wealthier because of the illegal way of getting their money. This was also a choice children had to take part in. People today are still testing Social Disorganization Theory today to help improve
conditions.
