Buddhism is one of the oldest and most significant religions. It's prominence has caused other religions to emerge. It's prominence has caused other religions to emerge. Shinto is a religion that defined itself as Buddhist teachings spread to Japan. “Before that time there was no need to name the religion that was already present it was simply what everyone did.”(Michael Molloy, pg.258) The mere magnitude of Buddhism defined Shinto; however, these religions differ and have different deities that best symbolize their distinct characteristics.

These spirits (kami) are the spirits that accompany our world in all forms of matter. This is where Shinto-meaning the way of the gods, gets its name. However, they do give praise to some kami more than others. Amaterasu the sun goddess is “the most important deity of the Shinto religion and ruler of Takama no Hara (the High Celestial Plain), the domain of the kami or spirits”(Cartwright, M. 2012, December 17). Amaterasu was born from her father's tears as he cleaned himself after his visit to the underworld. Along with Amaterasu two other kami’s were born; the spirit of the moon and the spirit of storms. Amaterasu being the brightest was sent to rule the sky. Amaterasu is known for sending her grandson to bring order to the islands of japan. The argument resulted in the sun goddess locking herself in a cave for a long period of time, doing this allowed for the dark and evil spirits to reign over the world. It took tremendous efforts from other kami’s to get her out of the cave. After getting her out of the cave she went to seek to right hood of earth and its heavens from the earthly ruler. As the earth ruler gave up earth to rule the underworld Amaterasu asked her sun to rule earth. He rusfused and offered her son instead to which she agreed.
