Two colleges that I am considering are Saint Louis University and Truman State University; I have thoroughly researched important aspects of college in order to decide which college best fits my personality. Upon final comparison, both colleges exhibit elements that attract me, so they would both be an appropriate fit for me, but SLU would benefit me more because Saint Louis University (SLU) has a seemingly stronger nursing program and convenient surroundings while Truman has an excellent student life and family.
Education is an extremely important factor in choosing a college; both Saint Louis University and Truman State University offer excellent academics through medical programs.
Within the Medical Program at Saint Louis University, the nursing and physician assistant (PA) branches are outstanding and maintain an admirable success rate. There are “87%” of graduates from SLU’s PA program that “are active in practice as physician assistants in primary care practices” (Slu.edu), showing that the success rate is relatively high. Within the PA program, “the primary mission...is to educate men and women to become competent, compassionate physician assistants dedicated to excellence in healthcare and the service of humanity.” (Slu.edu). SLU also offers an exceptional nursing program. A student remarks, “I love the holistic vision of healthcare and treating the overall person: mind, body, and their soul. ("Saint Louis University" Studentsreview.com). Overall, SLU works to both educate students and implant moral practices. They strive to teach medical students how to serve God and others through their future occupation. SLU exhibits a high placement rate due to the experience and instruction the students receive, therefore creating an excellent medical program. Similar to Saint Louis University, Truman State University has an admirable nursing program supported by dedicated teachers, but, unfortunately does not have as noteworthy of a physician assistant program. In pursuit of becoming a PA, I would have the option "as a health science major at Truman, [to] choose pre-physician assistant studies as [my] area of concentration and tailor [my] classes to meet the prerequisite coursework"(Truman.edu). I would work with a course advisor in order to ensure I take all the classes necessary to apply for physician assistant school (Truman.edu). If I entered the nursing program at Truman, I should be able to enter “all areas of nursing practice including maternal, child, mental, adult, and community health nursing (Truman.edu) after I graduate. The physician assistant program does not appear as notable as the nursing program. Within the PA program, students build their own schedules, with the help of advisors, to prepare for physician’s assistant school. On the other hand, nursing receives endless praise. The nursing teachers are dedicated to forming relationships with students and providing all the help necessary for success. Overall, the medical program at SLU offers more thorough courses and better prepares students for the real world better due to the city’s resources the program uses for clinicals. Truman, isolated in a small town, does not offer many resources for clinicals. Although the class size is typically smaller and more personal at Truman, SLU offers a better program, which is what I am paying for in the end. With that in consideration, attending Saint Louis University would best prepare me for the profession I wish to practice.
The student life and activities at a college are vital contributors to the “legendary” college experience; both Saint Louis University and Truman State University offer numerous ways for students to become active in the school and local area. SLU makes an effort to make students feel at home by pushing them to become involved at and around school through social events, sports, and clubs. A junior reflects, “There are a lot of activities going on the whole year. The first week is dedicated to helping people connect. There are always bonding activities the student board puts on” (Spratt.) Students form connections by participating in the 140 organizations offered, such as swimming and lacrosse ("Saint Louis University" CollegeView.com). Founded on a Jesuit background, SLU ensures that students are able to practice religious habits. SLU holds a large mass service, but also offers a ministry outreach building that connects students with organizations and churches aligning with their beliefs (Spratt). SLU students have various opportunities to get involved with people who share similar interests in clubs, sports, and religious studies. Since a lot of activities occur on or near campus, students are able to connect with other people easily. The student life at SLU involves every student in one way or another, making students feel like they belong. Truman State displays noticeably friendly student body and offers several activities on and off campus that allow students to become immersed in the college lifestyle. In attempt to create a school family, “each floor has student advisors that push floors to bond and host activities together" (Holzmun). Outside of housing, there are 272 registered organizations, including lacrosse and swimming that students can participate in to meet people with alike interests ("Truman State University" CollegeView.com). Religious groups are offered within the organizations at Truman; a student reflects, “my roommate last year was a Lutheran and I went to a couple of the bible study things. They met each week” (Holzmun). The student activities board also ensures that students always have something available for entertainment, such as concerts, since the surrounding area only offers a few entertainment options, like a movie theatre and a park (Holzmun). Overall, “we have a very diverse group of people and everyone is accepted.” ("Truman State University" Niche.com). Truman is able to maintain a family feeling between the student body because of the friendly atmosphere and push to meet new people. Truman offers the two sports I wish to play in college, and they also promote ministry groups, in particular, a Lutheran bible study; which is an important part of my identity. The school ensures that students on campus will have fun activities to participate in to keep entertained within the small town of Kirksville. Since the area is so small, people tend to be friendlier and get to know each other more personally. Overall, Truman comes off as a very friendly school whereas SLU initially seems exclusive. They both offer the extracurriculars I would join: lacrosse, swimming, and a ministry group. Considering they both offer the same assets, I would have to choose Truman as a better fit for me due to the welcoming atmosphere everywhere within student life that creates a school family, which would make my life at Truman more memorable.
Campuses and surrounding settlements become an individual's home for an important time during her life. Saint Louis University is located in Saint Louis, Missouri; a familiar location to me, and the campus offers several desired luxuries. Built on the campus is a recreational center with an abundance of pools, workout rooms, dance rooms, and gyms (Spratt). The rec center is a great asset to the campus since freshmen and sophomores must live on campus ("Saint Louis University" CollegeView.com). Being located in Saint Louis “means easy access to all the city has to offer” ("Saint Louis University" Niche.com), such as the Arch, City Museum, Fabulous Fox Theatre, Forest Park, Busch Stadium, and St. Louis Zoo. Since the campus is located in a city, a security system is in place; police “are always patrolling and have emergency poles with buttons throughout the campus. They are always available later at night” to escort individuals home (Spratt). Personally, I would make use of the pool in the recreational center because I am a swimmer. Being at the heart of Saint Louis, SLU students have the opportunity to explore the city and find fun events to engage at any time, and still have a safe way to return home. Another reason SLU’s location is extremely nice relates to the fact that I am from Saint Louis, so I am familiar with all the surrounding areas. On the contrary, Truman State University is surrounded by a small, unfamiliar town, but the campus offers lovely features similar to SLU. The campus’ “athletic center is nice for its size” and contains several gyms, workout rooms, and a pool ("Truman State University" Niche.com). The recreational center at Truman is nice to have since students must live on campus their freshman year, and 52% of all students live on campus ("Truman State University" CollegeView.com). Located within the small town surrounding the campus are a multiplex movie theater, local merchants that operate specialized stores, and several restaurants ("Truman State University" Petersons.com). To ensure campus safety, “there are emergency poles with emergency buttons and if you press it, a police officer will be there within 14 seconds to a minute” (Holzmun). Truman state provides the homey atmosphere that I would enjoy since I dislike cities and appreciate small populations. Even though the town is small, there are still activities to do. Truman offers a pool within the recreational center, so that satisfies my desire to swim. Truman displays a dedication to keeping students safe; it would be nice to feel safe when traveling around campus and the town. Both SLU and Truman have pros with their campus and surrounding environment. Truman consists of a nice, cozy town where people will form personal relationships and recognize each other at the market whereas SLU is a bustling city filled with familiar places to me. I prefer to be comfortable with my surroundings, and SLU would fulfill that preference since I grew up in Saint Louis. SLU and Truman both have a respectable recreational center, and they both offer the facilities I wish to use during my college life, such as a pool and library. Both colleges practice safety policies and work closely with a nearby police force to ensure the safety of students. All in all, Saint Louis University is a better fit for me concerning the campus due to the familiar surroundings and the closeness to home and family. Truman State University and Saint Louis University both fit my basic needs in a college: a good education, a involved and friendly student lifestyle, and a pleasant campus atmosphere. I immensely appreciate the family atmosphere connected to Truman, but that appears to be the only item ranking better than SLU upon comparison. I plan to attend college primarily to receive an education, so Saint Louis University appears to be a better choice since they provide a stronger nursing program. SLU close to my home, so I would be able to visit family easily and I would be comfortable with the area since I am familiar with it. An endless amount of entertainment can be found within the city limits of Saint Louis while Kirksville has a limited supply even with traveling to the surrounding cities. I believe I would be content attending both institutes, but Saint Louis University would serve me better in education for my future profession and help me to identity and to strengthen my morals with help dedicated teachers. I will be able to fully embrace the atmosphere at SLU, therefore creating the ideal conditions for my heart to become educated as well as my mind.
