Compare And Contrast The Address And A Cap For Steve
ENG2D1 Summative Essay
The short stories I’m comparing are “The Address” by Marga Minco and “A cap for Steve” by Morley Callaghan. Both stories are diverse as they don’t have much in common, yet rather talk about the significance of life and what values matter most. I’ll show the differences in the main characters, the setting of where each story takes place, and the plot of both short stories.

The characters in both short stories have different motivations, yet each character realizes the values that matter to them the most. In “A cap for Steve”, Steve Diamond is a 12 year old boy whose an avid baseball fan, who is bashful to the outside world. Steve comes from a family of 3 including his mom Anna, and his dad Dave. In “A cap for Steve” the setting takes place in a town where wealth in an area matters, as it divides the rich and the poor. In the area where I live in, it somewhat works like that where all the middle class families live together and all the low income families live together. In “The Address” it clearly talks about where all the dialogue and action is taking place. It takes place in Holland, Netherlands in a Jewish neighborhood because that’s where the address is.
The authors of these two short stories (Morley Callaghan and Marga Minco) both have different styles when it comes to writing short stories like these. “A cap for Steve” is written in first person view so most of the dialogue is between Steve and his father. That gives me sense that Morley Callaghan who wrote this short story, wants the reader to act out as the person and wants the reader to be the character. “The Address” is written in third person view so most of the dialogue is the protagonist explaining her past. That gives me sense that Marga Minco who wrote this short story, wants the reader to feel what the character is describing her

They both are on the same topics but they go about telling it in different ways. Both stories are written in first person by the authors writing the letters themselves. How they both profoundly feel is in the letter but very professionally and respectfully. The other story “Declaration of Sentiments of the Seneca Falls Woman’s Rights Convention” the author explains how she feels also but, using how the women feel as well.…

Another short story that I found very interesting to read was, “Neighbor Rosicky," and the main character Anton Rosicky, who happen to be a farmer from Nebraska, and reflects his sense of values, when he actually finds out that he has a bad heart, then starts to experience troubling thoughts all about what lies ahead for his family given that it’s large, his wife, children, and the crops if he dies. Rosicky, then start to wonder about his big family, who will provide for them, will the children ever have a future one that was prosperous, liked he hoped and how would they cope with everything, after he passes away. He also starts to reflect back on his childhood as he was growing up, mostly the happy times. For a person like Rosicky, who is…

The short stories, "A Municipal Report" and "A Jury of Her Peers," are two good pieces of literature in their own special way. I believe that "A Jury of Her Peers" is the interpretive piece of literature while "A Municipal Report" is the escape literature. The stories both have good dialect, yet the only thing in common is that there are two oppressed women whose husbands are murdered. In "A Jury of Her Peers", the woman murders her husband, but in "A Municipal Report", a man kills her husband for her. Although they are both good literature, only one is worthy of the scale of value.…

It was a very interesting read of both the stories I have chosen. In this essay I have chosen to compare Art Spiegelman’s From Maus and Trifles by Susan Glaspell because even when they have many things differently, I have found some things in common. Their way of writing is different, they way they tell their story is different but their passion into the story and the concept of the stories I have found them to have something in common.…

I decided to compare the two short stories, "Sonny's Blues," by James Baldwin and "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor. Both stories deal with characters learning to deal with their definition, values and identities also to see the way in which the narrator in "Sonny's Blues" and the grandmother in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" both are forced to deal with their prejudice that they have against other characters in the story and coming to a realization that they understand the wrong of their prejudice.…

As stated before, these two poems are very similar in a whole. They both carry a strength throughout their entire poems. The poems also shows people who are overcoming obstacles in their lives, within society, and how it effects them. The dignity and fortitude of the people develop the future of America. Both of these poems also strive to create a better society. In general, both of the poems have a deeper meaning than what is actually stated. Positive messages are also brought forth.…
