expository mode to share their perspectives. In other words, both films use argumentative logic and commentary, additionally using interviews and social actors to their advantage in these arguments. The general tone of both films are quite different, Loose Change is very serious and straight to the point; Fahrenheit 9/11 on the other hand makes some satirical jokes here and there but conveys a serious message. For example “Loose Change” uses a monotone, very objective voice which seems to be all knowing and all-encompassing, or a “voice of God” if you will. “Fahrenheit 9/11” on the other hand uses some humor and sometimes more upbeat music to lighten the mood of the documentary. Michael Moore also uses the “voice of God” commentary but he also appears on camera to interview some important people or use social actors to prove a point, which adds a more personal feel to the film. However, both films remain constant to their overall goal to convey and induce epistephilia among the viewers about the intentions of the government to enter the war in Iraq and the truth behind the 9/11 attacks.
On official documents, the invasion of Iraq was to find and destroy WMDs or weapons of mass destruction. However Michael Moore would beg to differ on this subject. Michael points out the long and deeply rooted connections President Bush had with the Saudis’ and oil industry in Iraq, specifically Halliburton. The Bush family would stand to gain enormous gain in wealth and power from securing an oil pipeline service in Iraq. Except they have a dilemma, how are they supposed to get into Iraq and secure power there so they can have high control over the oil fields in the region? Compounded with other issues the government was having, such as a low approval rating and slow production rate in congress, there needed to be a dramatic and catalyzing event. Conveniently 9/11 was their answer. “Loose Change” then takes the reigns as to the logic behind this exceptionally bold claim. The government needed something big, so they meticulously planned many “coincidences” to occur on 9/11 and implement the harsh use of compartmentalization to make sure not even the government knows what happened, except the elite few. Just as a sample of the many “coincidences”, the only defenses to the twin towers were directed away due a hijacking training exercise about planes flying into the twin towers, which in turn disabled military officials when reports of the exact exercise started coming in, assuming the real thing was just an exercise. So who is the real axis of evil? Is it the Iraqi’s? After analyzing and discussing both of these films, you may start to think the answer might be here at home after all.
