Offred’s journey takes place in a different time, where everything in the world has been completely changed. For the good and the bad, the new society is called Gilead. In this place, there is a hierarchy in which men rule. Women are divided into categories and are given tasks and roles based on the division. Living a house, where she was isolated from the world. She began to think about her journey, and how she ended up in Gilead.Having no type of interaction outside of the few handmaids, she was casted away in her room.Not being able to read or write, there is nothing for Offred to do. She has daily chores she must adhere to, but communication is not allowed. Day in and day out, Offred is surrounded by people who she can not communicate with. Privacy doesn’t exist here. “ The door of the room--- not my room, I refuse to say my--- is not locked. IN fact it doesn’t shut properly” (Atwood, 8). Offred describes her living situation and how the new home she has been given is nothing of near a home. Being isolated from everyone within the home, all Offred can do is wonder and watch
