In the story "Harrison Bergeron"
by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., the main theme is individuality. Harrison Bergeron, the leading character, fights for the right of individuality in his society. People that have a high level of intelligence, beauty or talent are disabled by transmitters, weights or masks. This is enforced by the government so everyone can be absolutely equal. Although the main character gets killed in the end, it left the readers with the hope of this society letting people express their individuality. "Harrison Bergeron" relates to The second story was “Never” and is written by H.E. Bates. The main theme of this story is hopelessness; as she wanted to leave everyone behind and go settle somewhere else. She attempts to become independent but she fails in the end. The theme of “Never” relates to “The Lottery” through routine as the author shows the girls daily routine. It also relates to the theme of “Harrison Bergeron through exertion. In “Never”, the girls plans to leave her residence for change as she was tired of the same routine, however the protagonist fails at the end. Similarly, in “Harrison Bergeron”, the protagonist wants to get rid of the government enforced law. But, the protagonist fails after an attempt. So, the overlapping theme for the two stories is exertion. In conclusion, “Never” relates to “The Lottery” through the theme routine and to “Harrison Bergeron” through the term exertion.
Finally, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. The Lottery's theme is tradition. This has been shown through how even though some of the traditons have been since, people had lost their right to think and give their opinion. This theme relates to “The Lottery” thorough disagreement, because the unjust is the theme for “The Lottery. “Harrison Bergeron’s” theme also connects to “Never” through exertion, as hopelessness is the theme of “Never”. “Harrison Bergeron’s” theme can be described using the words disagreement and exertion. Disagreement is one, as the protagonist had disagreed top the law that the government has created. Exertion is another one, as the protagonist had attempted to discontinue the particular law, but was unsuccessful in the end. The conflict of this story was created between “man vs. man.”
