One aspect explored in these two texts is how humans, no mater how malicious and unpleasant, are always glad to be able to repair and forgive. This is particularly explored in Enduring Love, how Joe feels almost forgiving when he learns of Jed’s condition, De Clerambaults Syndrome. Once he understands that Jed is not mad, just ill and suffering from a condition, this gives Joe relief and sometimes even forgiveness and pity for him. “... at some point.. I almost felt sorry for him..despite my hostility and revulsion”. Joe has made it clear so far for the reader that he feels repulsed and off put by Jed, and so this strengthens this point even more, Joe now shows a hint of compassion towards his “aggressor”, so Joe is shown to act and feel empathy which is an optimistic point.
Another example would be how Bonny Deeds and James Reid felt the need to explain and apologise for all the grief and suffering Mrs Logan went through by finding the picnic and scarf in the car. This shows that although the reader understands that they are in the wrong that they have made the right decision to explain and apologise, how they still felt the need to do so under politeness and courtesy. This is an act of pure, simple kindness that just shows the compassion and understanding of some people, how they react positively to an event.
Generally, the themes concerning optimism in both pieces of writing are how human empathy and sacrifice remain able to stun and improve life, however bleak life may seem. There will always be a portion of people who are willing to sacrifice their own life for the good of mankind, which in turn gives hope and happiness in the rest of the world. This fact is backed up by Logan’s purely amazing act of self-sacrifice which unfortunately cost him his life. He was given a choice to let go, but he feared for the boy’s safety so hung on to help ensure his protection.
