The Truman Doctrine and the Marshall plan that he had enacted were taken offensively by the USSR. It looked to them as if Truman was getting in the way of European control. This snowballed into what would become the beginning of the cold war. Truman had also made several attempts at civil rights reforms. Which unfortunately had all fallen flat on their faces. It pitted large swathes of the south against him. He presided over a time that was richly stewed in the fear of communism. An additional problem that did not make his job any easier. It was a serious concern of many that it would be an evil that would infiltrate the American government. Truman’s Fair Deal also came into effect around this time. It’s goal was to fulfill hopes of a more humane and just society. Similar to the aspirations of the previous plans the Square Deal and the New Deal. But that was not all. The last straw on though was when Truman decided to publicly relieved MacArthur of his duties after the failure during the Korean war at the Yalu river, a grave error that cost a lot of time and money. But it was not the military shortcoming that reflected poorly. It was the fact that regardless of the fact that MacArthur and Truman did not see eye to eye on what the strategy should have been, and even though he was bad mouthing the president, MacArthur was a renowned public figure. He was loved and respected and had contributed substantially to the war efforts over the years. It was considered disrespectful to discharge him the way that Harry did. After this poor choice there was no rebound for Truman. He had sealed his fate of unpopularity and he rode out the rest of his final term, making a few poor calls to diss the favored up and coming candidate Dwight
