Jackpot, lucky seven and snake eyes, these are just a few words that fill the air in a casino. A casino is the place to gamble money in order to make quick change. Just like the 1960s, people gambled their time and lives away in order to change the world. While there are many who gambled for racial equality, two were extremely good at it. Their names were Malcom X, and Martin Luther King Jr. Though there methods were different, they both made change. Although the change made isn’t money, but a change in the people in order for them to strive for racial equality. Evidently, when Malcom begins to guide the people, he becomes a card dealer instead of the gambler, making the people gamble at his ideas. Therefore when Malcom X gives his speech, like a dealer in a casino, he…

Two different writers, Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. and Henry David Thoreau, argue that society is not at its finest and that every man has the responsibility to impact change and every many has the power to do so, only if man is an extremist for the greater good. King was a reverend but more importantly he was a dominant voice for thousands of persecuted people during the civil rights movement. From King expressing his knowledge and acting on them, he was obliged and jailed (he was obliged to jail?) within King's cell he composed a letter entitled “Letter from Birmingham Jail”. (transition?) Thoreau was a philosopher who contained all the qualities of a transcendentalist. Much time before King’s letter, Thoreau fabricated a response to when…

Upon comparing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dalai Lama it becomes apparent that the two share many similar doctrines and beliefs. Although they come from two totally different backgrounds it seems as though their overall goals and dreams coincide. The most striking similarity is that both men advocated/advocate for peace and nonviolent solutions to problems. While they may have approached matters differently the goal was the same. Analyzing both men one begins to see that they are admired by so many people because of their philosophies.…

In regards to two influential and criticized men, Dr. M. L. King and Edward Said, both wrote two grand literary pieces. To address their audiences, both writers use effective persuasive techniques. Such as King for example, uses analogies, parallelism, and to reiterate. Said on the other hand uses rhetorical questions, cause and effect, and narration. Similarly, both King and Said are addressing two nuance audiences that are in similar cavalier situations.…

Williams and MLK had different opinions on how to deal with racism and segregation in America at the time. Williams thought did not agree with the pacifist approach to racism that MLK promoted. Williams wrote that “nonviolence is a very potent weapon when the opponent is civilized, but nonviolence is no match or repellent for a sadist.” On the other end of the scale, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Statement of Purpose preached that love was what binds all people together and that love “goes to the extreme; it remains loving and forgiving even in the midst of hostility.” Then there was MLK who said a violent approach “will mislead Negroes into the belief that this is the only path and place them as a minority in a position where…

Malala and Dr. King Malala and Dr. King, though different in age and gender, were both enormously brave and persistent. Both Malala and Dr. King were threatened by death, but they stood strong and continued on with their crusades. Malala was threatened by the Taliban for speaking out against a girl’s right to go to school, and Dr. King was threatened for speaking out against racial inequality. Though they both fought for the same general idea of freedom, Malala and Dr. King did approach the idea of equality differently (blogging versus speeches), even though both were inspirational. These individuals are so inspirational, in fact, that both have a day named after them!…

With the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the three thousand dead from 9/11, these two major events have drastically changed, not only American history, but as well as the lives of many Americans themself. Both King and the Trade Center can be seen as symbols of a new hope and peace for many Americans but tragically, the fall of both these symbols results in chaos for this progressing nation. With the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in the Guardian’s “After the death of Martin Luther King: chaos or community” and the collapse of the World Trade center in Ian McEwan’s “Only Love and Then Oblivion”, the ideas of chaos and unity play essential components in each piece of writing through the aftermath of these senseless acts of destruction.…

One of the most prominent aspects of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s movement toward racial equality was that it was nonviolent. Dr. King held peaceful protests, marches, and even boycotts in order to support his cause. Motivated by Dr. King's reliance on nonviolence, Cesar Chavez authored this untitled article with the goal of promoting nonviolence and helping those in need. Donald John Trump is a business later reality television star and now US presidential candidate. We've all heard it before. But what really stands out to make The real estate mogul different from the presidents in history? Throughout his campaign he has produced a straightforward rhetoric often viewed as offensive and laid a platform where minorities may feel threatened. He has appealed vastly to the Common Man by making promises to bring back jobs shipped off to other countries and to cut business regulations. He's promised to build walls and to lay down strict immigration policies. Much of this appeals to the common working class person, who feels like the Obama Administration in particular did not have their back. However, Trump is one…

The words in which Martin Luther king jr used to describe education are accurate in my eyes. Education itself is meant to provide a person with information as well as a variety of different ideas and perspectives of the world, which could be seen as the intelligence aspect described in the quote. From these ideas and views, a person is allowed to develop their own opinions which in turn shapes the person and their beliefs creating the character aspect of Kings definition. In order for a person to achieve this, they must think critically--by definition, this means an objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement. The idea again comes full circle to the thought that one forms the character from the basis of intelligence. This is true in many instances of my life. I have found that so far my academic career has given me opportunities to discover myself as well as install myself in the community. Entering the university of Louisville would allow me to further discover myself and contribute to not only the surrounding community but the campus.…

“Trump ran as a divider, not a uniter. He won that way -- offering safe harbor for people who had long resented politicians who told them they had to accept those who didn't look like them, sound like them or think like them” (Cillizza). Again, Trump used the propaganda technique, plain-folks appeal, to appear the same as the voters, in order to win the Presidential…

Setbacks and obstacles occur in many individual’s life at one point or another, but one’s response to that setback is what matters most. Horace’s perspective on adversity establishes that one encounters characteristics within oneself through hardship versus successful times which is a perpetuated belief within society. Not only is this ideology common, but in fact true, as prominent examples such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama overcoming racial discrimination, as well as those deriving from difficult childhoods such as Oprah Winfrey and Albert Einstein.…
