I feel that both Dillard and Didion have a very personable narrative writing style that engages the audience in different ways. Joan Didion’s “The Santa Ana” immediately pulled me into her story with the introductory sentence: “There is something uneasy in the Los Angeles air this afternoon, some unnatural stillness, some tension” (Aaron and Kuhl 44). I was also impressed by how she was able to convey a message of severity and some chaos through her narrative of the effects the Santa Ana winds have on not only the people but in Los Angeles and other locations around the world that have similar experiences due to the nature and harshness. The closing sentence: “The wind shows us how close the edge we are” (47), sent chills down my spine and…

The song, “Wishin’ and Hopin’” by Hal David and Burt Bacharach, illustrates how some women display themselves as a property for men in order to attract them. For example, the girl is told to “do the things that he likes to do”. This suggests that women need to show interest in the man’s fascinations in order to be noticed. Similarly the girl is advised to “wear [her] hair just for him”. By using the word “just”, the writers indicate that a women’s appearance should depend on the man’s preference instead of their own pleasure. The authors use imperative commands along with physical verbs to enforce the actions that the girl must perform for the man’s attention. Physical verbs, such as “squeeze” and “kiss”, are normally actions done under lustful…

I just knew that in my heart” (Schroff and Tresniowski 97).
