All through the Analects of Confucius the author discusses his opinions on the right way to live. This is seen when he writes “‘ Approach them with dignity and they will be they will be respectful” (Fiero 168). He say this when he is asked how to treat someone if he wants them to be “respectful, loyal, and zealous” (Fiero 168). The
author is explaining how the golden way to live is to treat people how you want to be treated. In this case if the leader wants respect from his people then he will have to give them the same. An example on how the author thinks a true gentleman should act is when he writes “ The gentleman considers the whole rather than the parts. The small man considers the parts rather than the whole” (Fiero 168). Here the reader sees how in the author's eyes the right way to act is to look at the big picture and how everything will have an a bigger impact rather than just focusing on the small stuff and ignoring the fact that everything has a reaction.
Like the Analects of confucius the Buddha also describes his opinion on the correct way to live and his version of the Golden mean. An example of this is when the author writes “. . . the habitual practice on the one hand, of self-indulgence which is unworthy, vain and fit only for the worthy minded - and the habitual practice, on the other hand, of self-mortification, which is painful, useless and unprofitable” (Fiore 194).
This quote shows how the Buddha believes that the middles bath or the “golden mean” is how people should live. He says how it's bad to have too much self-indulgence but it's just as bad to have self-mortification. To live the perfect way people need to live in the middle of to much and not enough. Another place where the Buddhas opinion is seen on how to live correctly is when he says “Verily! It is this noble eightfold path; that is to say: ‘Right views; right aspirations; right speech; right behaviors; right livelihood; right effort; right thoughts; and right contemplation” (Fiore 194).
The “noble eightfold path” (Fiore 194) is the Buddha's version of the golden mean and correct way of living life. He is that by having the middle and right amounts of all of these things then people will be living a good life. Once again the topic of not having to much or too little of those things are not good. There are many different philosophies on life and how it should be lived. People all have their own opinions on how one should life their life and treat the people in it. Treating people how you want to be treated and having the perfect amount of everything is one famous philosophy and throughout both Confucius and Buddha the authors discuss their opinions on the right way to life and the golden mean.
