Before teachers begin an outdoor learning experiences, a lot of factors must be considered. Thus, there needs to be a lot of preparation that goes into it. The first thing to remember is to contact the administration and the parents. Explain what you will be doing, and how it pertains to the students’ education. Depending on the activity, sometimes, the administration will be hesitant to approve the activity, and other times, they may provide you with information and give contact information to community members who are experts on the topic. In addition, it is crucial to pay attention to details that will keep the students safe. These also assure parents that their children will be safe. The next step is to acquire a map of the location that will be observed. The teacher must be sure to carefully explore the neighborhood for local parks that students can study. The location must be biologically diverse. This means that there are different kinds of organisms in the same ecosystem. This gives students many things to observe and record. The mapping part of the experience involves the students. Show the students the map of the place that they will be observing. This kindles the student’s interest, and they have an idea of what the experience will be like. Before heading out, have the students consider the process of making observations, asking ecological questions, and making hypothesis. Thus, students should have basic observational skills before they explore the ecosystem.
