Comparing and Contrasting Singers
Two of my favorite bands got their start in the early 1990’s, and both have kept their extremely talented singers since then. While you could lump both bands into the rock/metal genre, they do have their differences. Till Lindemann of Rammstein and James Maynard Keenan of Tool have some similar qualities, however there are quite a few things that set them apart. Language, genre, and lyrical content are all things that should be taken into account when looking at these singers. Till Lindemann of the world famous band Rammstein, has a deep bass voice. Nearly all that he sings is in the German language, with a few songs in English, two in Russian, one in Spanish, and one in French. He usually rolls his r’s and growls the ‘ach’ sound. His singing voice and style are resonant and unique. The music he performs is mostly industrial metal, with some songs having techno, pop, or blues influences. Some of the lyrics to his songs are political, some are playful, some are serious and emotional, and plenty are quite controversial and darkly humored. James Maynard Keenan of the band Tool, has more of a cult following. His voice is more of a tenor, and in my opinion, one of the most gorgeous voices I have ever heard. He only sings in English. His vocal range is quite impressive, singing low to high and in between. His voice evokes emotion in the listener and commands power. Tool would best be described as progressive metal, with many of their songs written in odd meter and with demanding instrumentals. Thought-provoking lyrics and well written music are highlights of their songs. Like Rammstein, some songs are political, many are emotional, some have dark humor, and a few are also controversial. These two singers that are part of my favorite bands are my favorites for a reason. They’re similar in some respects, but different enough to suit different moods. Both share
