Compare The Statues Of David Michelangelo
In the renaissance the biblical character, David, was very popular especially between the three sculptors such as Michelangelo, Bernini, and Donatello. The three statues that are presented are statues of David before, during, and after the battle with the giant Goliath. The story of David is presented in the book of Samuel in the bible. In the book of Samuel it states that the Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. Goliath was a Philistine giant measuring over nine feet tall. Goliath wore a full armor suit and for forty days he challenged the Israelites to fight. However, the Israelites would not fight because they were absolutely terrified of Goliath. One day David was sent to battle, and at the time David was a young teenager. …show more content…
Michelangelo made the statue out of stone. I have seen this status in real life when I went to Italy last summer. I went to Italy to represent America in softball as a starter on the America’s team. I saw this statue in the city of Florence. The statue of David by Michelangelo in Florence is bigger than life size unlike the other two statues. Florence uses the statue of David as a symbol of defense because of what it represents. The statue of David was positioned to where David’s eyes were toward Rome, because the statue of David’s eyes are glaring. The reason for this is because Michelangelo wanted to show how David was looking at Goliath before the battle started. The real statue of David is not located in the streets anymore it was replaced by a replica to protect it from damage. This particular statue of David looks confident to me, because he trusts in God and the talents he has received from God. The reason he is naked is because I believe Michelangelo wanted to truly portray the vision that David didn’t need a “kings armor” to defeat Goliath, the only armor that David needed was the only true king and that is the armor of God. I also believe that Michelangelo sculpted the statue as a man because David stepped into a grown man’s position while keeping the confidence and not being scared. David’s confidence came from the faith of God because he knew God would not let him

On a positive note, David and his forces were able to take control of Jerusalem, which was a major stronghold that withstood multiple attempts of siege. However, opposition came from within the Israelite nation on multiple fronts. The execution of Saul’s descendants and the rebellion of both Absalom and Sheba all demonstrate how David did not necessarily have the support of all of Israel.…

Humanism, during the Renaissance period not only involved the study of ancient culture, but it also instilled a sense of respect towards human beings. Many artists at the time focused on the beauty and elegance of the human body. One of these artists was Michelangelo, a sculptor and painter. One of his most famous pieces of work was “David”, a 17 foot tall statue of a man. Michelangelo focused on making the statue as realistic as possible, in order to capture said elegance and beauty. Also, due to the context of the statue being directly after David had slain the goliath, Michelangelo chose “David” to be in a victorious pose. This…

Donatello, whose David was the first life-size nude statue since Classical times, struck a balance between Classicism and the realism by presenting a very real image of an Italian peasant boy in the form of a Classical nude figure. Although Donatello was inspired by Classical figures, he did not choose a Greek youth in his prime as a model for his David. Instead, he chooses a barely developed adolescent boy whose arms appeared weak due to the lack of muscles. After defeating Goliath, whose head lies at David 's feet, he rests his sword by his side, almost to heavy to handle. It seems almost impossible that a young boy like David could have accomplished such a task. David himself seems skeptical of his deed as he glances down towards his body. Apparently, David 's intellect, faith and courage made up for his lack of build (Fichner-Rathus 331-332).…

The expression on the faces of each character in this painting drew me in even more. I wanted to know more: Why? Who? What was about to happen? At first glance, it seemed as though the woman in the background, Clytemnestra the mother, is being disturbed. King Agamemnon, the man portrayed in the foreground, appears to be directing the soldier, Achilles, as he is about to strike. After reading the history behind the painting, I better understand the expressions shown and see how they enhance the story that David is portraying.…

Donatello’s David differs form Michael Angelo’s in that it is probably a more realistic depiction of what David actually looked like. David was young and inept in comparison to the soldiers who fought in the battle at Jerusalem. That’s why his defeat of Goliath was impressive. Donatello’s sculpture of David is a bronze sculpture of a young boy, he even looks a little feminine, standing on top of Goliaths head with an assured expression on his face. Donatello’s sculptures…

Therefore, “David,” is a fit symbol of courage and civic duty to guard the city. Standing 13’5″ tall, the double life-sized David is depicted patiently waiting for battle, prepped with slingshot in one hand and stone in the other. Michelangelo, in his mid twenties, carved the David after he had already carved the Pieta in Rome. He carved this sculpture from a huge block of marble that had been abandoned decades earlier by another sculptor: Michelangelo took on the challenge of living up to Donatello and other precursors who had sculpted the same heroic figure. Instead of creating David to look relaxed and confident after his victory, Michelangelo's David looks tense and ready for combat. His brow is furrowed, the tendons in his neck are taut, as are the muscles in his nose and lips, and his eyes are focused on something in the distance. Despite this mental concentration, he stands in a relaxed “contrapposto” position, with his sling casually thrown over his left shoulder. This combination of intense expression and calm pose is intended to capture the short period between the decision to fight and the fight itself. The statues hands and head appear to be disproportionally large for his body, possibly because they were deemed more visually important for viewers who would see the statue high up…

Michelangelo Buonarroti, born in the sixteenth century, was perhaps one of the greatest artisans of all time. He was an accomplished artist, sculptor, architect, and poet who demonstrated his great skill with the creation of many astounding works. Michelangelo 's artwork consisted of paintings and sculptures that showed humanity in its natural state. He is remembered today as the man who had sculpted the "David" and the "Pieta", which are two of the most stunning sculptures to come out of the Renaissance period. Although sculpting was the love of his life, his paintings of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and "The Last Judgement" are considered by many his best masterpieces. Michelangelo 's artistic career can be divided into two periods. In the early period he focused on realism. During this early period Michelangelo 's works included the Pieta and the David. At the age of 24 he completed a statue called the "Pieta," which is still in its original place in Saint Peter 's Basilica. This marble sculpture shows the dead Jesus Christ in his mother 's arms. In 1501 Michelangelo returned to Florence, Italy to sculpt the famous nude sculpture called the "David." The "David" measures 18 feet tall, and is so massive that it took 40 men to move it from Michelangelo 's workshop (Liebert, 72). The second period of Michelangelo 's career was based upon his own imagination. In 1505 Michelangelo was summoned by Pope Julius II to fabricate a monumental tomb for him. We have no clear sense of what the tomb was to look like, since over the years it went through at least five conceptual revisions, and was never actually finished due to frustrating delays. A short time after starting the tomb, Pope Julius II selected Michelangelo to fresco the Sistine Chapel ceiling. When other artists were asked to paint ceilings they lied down on the scaffolding. Michelangelo painted in a standing position which caused him much discomfort (Liebert 146-147). Michelangelo even wrote a sonnet in…

When thinking of sculptures, one of the first that comes to mind is David. This statue was created of marble between 1501 and 1504 and stands over 14 feet high. David is a symbol that represents strength and anger. The statue had intended political connotations for the ruling of the Medici family. Michelangelo used David as model of "heroic courage" to demonstrate that "spiritual strength can be more effective than arms". Michelangelo insisted that David should stand as a symbol of the republic and act as a warning that Florence shall be governed justly and bravely". This was the first time since antiquity that a large nude statue be exhibited in a public place.…
