While Beowulf and Disney’s The Incredibles’ main character, Mr. Incredible, live in different time periods, they both exhibit characteristics worthy of a hero. Mr. Incredible is a 21st century hero who uses his innate abilities to fight crime. In addition to protecting the community, Mr. Incredible balances his duties with being a strong father figure to his family. Further down the time line of history, Beowulf is an 8th century hero who, despite being single, possesses many qualities reminiscent of a modern day hero. Even though both characters display many similar qualities, their differences play a large role in forming their character.…
Many years ago I saw a copy of Thomas Kinkade’s painting of Beauty and the Beast. He was known as The Painter of Light, and did several paintings especially for Disney. As soon as I saw it, I fell in love. Belle has always been my favorite Disney princess, because I have always thought that we were similar. We both love to read, are different from the others around us, have brown hair, and tend to always look on the bright side of things. Every time I look at this picture I feel at peace, and am happy.…
The Wizard of Oz is like the Odyssey because both Dorothy and Odysseus are determined and anxious to return home. Odysseus and Dorothy both meet characters along the journey who help them and evil characters trying to not let them reach home. Good characters who give advice in the Wizard of Oz are the munchkins who show Dorothy where to go to get to the Emerald city to ask the wizard how she will be able to return home. Good characters who give advice and help Odysseus are Athena and King Aleous.…
“The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” is a short story that was written by Washington Irving in 1820 and then was later on turned into a movie in 1999 by Tim Burton. The short story “Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” is based on a well-known legend of the headless horseman in the small town of sleepy hollow. This short story tells the tale of the alleged disappearance of the main character, Ichabod Crane. This story, leaves you guessing as to what is the truth about Ichabod Crane's disappearance? While in the movie, it is more of a Hollywood version of Irving’s original story. As the movie begins in New York and introduces Ichabod crane a detective, who has his own vision of how to “solve” crimes. Ichabod Crane is then sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the three murder cases of the townspeople. Although the movie is fairly similar to the short story , the movie ends up taking a twist that leads the ending in a different direction from the original story.…
In a comparison between the book Le Morte d’Arthur and the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, we can see a major difference in the story telling of the legend of King Arthur. In the book Le Morte d’Arthur, the author Sir Thomas Malory tells us the story of King Arthur in a serious manner and in a way that makes us feel that the entire book is real and that the legend of King Arthur did exist. In contrast to Le Morte d’Arthur, Monty Python and the Holy Grail tells the story in a comedic way and it is not realistic. Moreover, unlike Morte d’Arthur, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is out of order and the characters in this movie are quite silly.…
The book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was always thought to be a child’s tale, a “modernized fairy tale” until Henry M. Littlefield wrote an article about how The Wizard of Oz was actually an allegory for the Populist era. Littlefield believed that each character and significant place in the book correlated with a person or place in the Populist era. L. Frank Baum wrote this children’s book as a political allegory, whether he intentionally did it we are not sure. However, the unwavering proof that there are connections between The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Populist era lead most people to believe that Baum was a political and social genius as he intertwined important people and places into a children’s book, masking the connection for many years.…
Everyone loves to immerse themselves into a dramatic and extraordinary story with evil monsters, brave hero's, and the desperate will to survive. It allows you to escape your troubles and take you to a new and exiting please with each and every second. However, there are some stories that simply do not capture the essence of breathtaking adventure. The movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? created by the comedic team of Ethan and Joel Coen, simply does not capture the perplexing classic story. O Brother, Where Art Thou? Is the big screen remake of Homer's epic poem, "The Odyssey". This original story is about the adventure of Odysseus as he escapes his seven year imprisonment from the goddess Calypso. This Epic hero battles numerous monsters on his desperate attempt to return home to his wife Penelope, whom he meets again in a heartfelt reuniting. However, in the re-make film, a man named Ulysseus is a prison escapee that is desperate to keep his wife, Penny, from marrying another man, lying and cheating his way to reach his goal. The Coen brothers have created such a disappointing excuse for capturing a real hero and his adventures to be reunited with his true love. It is near idiotic. The story is so foggy and distracted by the unneeded details, and it abandons the true meaning of the heartwarming story.…
What I love about the The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (TLWW) is its truly beautiful and enchanting story containing a Christian allegory. The movie falters in those moments where it robs the story of its purity and truth. As a child reading the story, or having it read to you, you are taken from an ordinary world into an extraordinary one. As Lewis wrote in his essay “On Three Ways of Writing for Children” the reader of a story like TLWW “does not despise real woods because he has read of enchanted woods: the reading makes all real woods a little enchanted.”…
Have you ever wondered where the irregular comedy from "Saturday Night Live" and other humorous shows have come from? Well, Voltaire's Candide is the origin. The events that take place in the novel would not qualify as humorous in reality, but the author uses certain effects to make it that way. The incongruity of humor shown in Monty Python and the Holy Grail is also derived from Candide in tone, expectation, and place.…
Do photographic illustrations work as well as hand drawn techniques at communicating the content and atmosphere of fairy tales?…
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a satiric comedy about the quest of King Arthur. The movie begins with Arthur, King of the Britons, searching for knights to sit with him at Camelot. Throughout his utterly ridiculous (and frankly hilarious) journey, he and his knights delve into a history of medieval events and happenings. “Why do you, as well as many, find this film so hysterical?” you may ask. Monty Python and the Holy Grail employs a variety of postmodern characteristics, not only breaking traditional rules, but making it a comedy to withstand the test of time.…
If you look deeper into everyday things, you may find that some characters or objects in a story represent real-life people or scenarios. When I was a young child, I watched the “The Wizard of Oz,” all the time; but when we watched it together in my U.S. History Class, I realized that the meaning is much deeper than it seems. Many of the characters and significant places or things in the movie can represent people, places, things and ideas from American history. There are many ways to connect “The Wizard of Oz,” to history.…

In Alice Munro’s two short stories “How I Met My Husband” and “Walker Brothers Cowboy” there are many similarities and dissimilarities. The main points of contrast and comparison are the setting, social and economic standing and theme.…
There are many versions to the famous fairy tale Cinderella. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s German version of Cinderella, “Aschenputtel,” is a household story of a young girl named Cinderella who eventually marries a prince. This specific version of Cinderella gave birth to the Walt Disney version of Cinderella that most Americans know today. However the stories are very different. The Grimm brothers’ version is much darker and gory then the classic American version. Small differences like this shed a different light on Cinderella and her journey to a “happy” ending.…
