Comparing Beowulf's Battles
uring the story of Beowulf, he is involved in three different battles. The first one is with Grendal, the second with Grendal’s mother, and the final one with the dragon. These battles show a lot about Beowulf and his men.
The first major similarity between these battles is that Beowulf for the most part he fights alone. During the first battle Beowulf fights against not only Grendal, but also against his men which shows how good of a fighter Beowulf because he was able to defeat them even though he was outnumbered. In his second battle, when fighting against Grendal’s mother he goes down to the bottom of the lake without his men to battle against her. During the third battle, his men desert him during the intense fight so Beowulf is left alone to fight his most challenging battle yet. In the end Beowulf is unable to defeat the dragon so he was left to lose alone.
Another similarity between the battles is that Beowulf is unable to defeat them with mortal weapons. In his battle against Grendal, he attempts to use the weapons from his men , but nothing harms Grendal, which forces Beowulf to fight him with his own hands. While fighting Grendal’s mother Beowulf attempts to use his sword, a mortal weapon, but it

For example, in his second battle after killing his enemy he is not satisfied, he is still filled with anger and hatred so he searches for Grendal in the battle hall. Once he finds his body he proceeds to behead him with the sword he used to kill his mother. In the battle against Grendal, once he cuts off his arm and sends him back to his swamp and continues his journey. Another difference between the battles is the outcome.Although he is successful against Grendal and his mother, during the battle with Grendal’s mother he almost loses but is able to come back and kill her. His battle against the dragon did not end the same, he was unable to overpower the

First off in the book when Beowulf encounters Grendel's mother he kills her by cutting her head off with a magical sword. In the story Beowulf has a cousin named Wiglaf we don't get to know about him until later in the story. Wiglaf also kills the dragon when Beowulf is too weak to fight. We also don't get to know that much of what Wiglaf looks like. In the story Beowulf does become king but it's of his homeland called Geet Land and not of the Danes. In the story The Grendel is a decedent of the Cain’s, which means hell in Old English. In "Beowulf" the story Beowulf also fights sea monsters with a giant sword when he goes to fight The Grendel's Mother. Lastly all the characters in "Beowulf" the story are flat characters meaning that they are not so much human and don't change feelings a lot.…

    Beowulf vs 13th Warrior

The most obvious difference between the two is the name of the heroes and their battling strengths. In the poem, Beowulf, the hero is known as Beowulf and has extraordinary strength whereas in the movie, The 13th Warrior, he is known as Buliwyf who has nothing other than regular human strength. Another difference occurs in the in how the beasts are portrayed. In the poem the main beasts name is Grendel, and in the movie the beast is known as the leader of thousands of other beasts. In Beowulf the hero only has to take on two beasts, Grendel and Grendel’s mother, in contrast the hero in The 13th Warrior has to take on thousands of beasts. When it came to the battles against the beasts, Buliwyf’s men fight alongside him against the thousands he had to take on, whereas Beowulf’s men took off except for one who stayed and fought by his side. In the poem, Beowulf kills Grendel by ripping off his arm and later returns to kill Grendel’s Mother. In contrast to the poem Buliwyf stabs the leader of the beasts to death after killing the leader’s mother.…

The plot of the epic poem Beowulf and the film The 13th Warrior differ greatly compared to each other. In Beowulf the main character, Beowulf set sail to the Danes land in order to defeat a monster named Grendel. In the film, the character that represents Beowulf, Buliwuf, sets out to defeat a race, not a single monster and its mother, the race of Wendols. The character defeats Grendel in the poem; but he does not defeat all of the Wendols in the film on the first attack. The character Buliwyf then defeats the Wendols on the second attack, where they kill the ‘mother.’ Both characters have to defeat a dragon, or ‘fire serpent.’ In the epic poem, Beowulf is not poisoned until he is scratched by the dragon. In the film, Buliwyf gets scratched by the mother. The characters go through turmoil; they fight for life and limb, and battle forces they did not even know existed. The plot of the story changes between both poem and film to accompany the story line and keep the reader interested; even though the main characters are different and they have different names, the whole plot as the same general idea, just in a different sequence.…

Differences are more common than similarities when Beowulf is compared with Sir. Gawain. The Similarities are small things like both lead characters are renound heros, both characters have fought galiantly in many battles, both characters are mighty warriors, both characters were considered perfect by their society's standards. The differences on the other hand were major things like Sir Gawain was a knight and remained a knight, therefore was subject to his king. Beowulf, on the other hand, started as a subject of kings, even though he was admired by kings, yet he eventually became a king himself. Another major difference is in the spiritual realm. Beowulf, as with all warrior societies, seemed to rely on spiritualism and ancient spells or relics. Whereas Sir. Gawain was a knight, and as such maintained a devout christian faith relying only on God.…

Throughout the film, it isn't hard to notice that Beowulf is more noble and slightly a more gentlemen. It shows him fighting to protect the people of the kingdom; he doesn't just do this for the fame, glory, or rewards. That is what we did know of Beowulf in the book though. His fighting was just to be self-centered and selfishly misusing his abilities for his own good, not for the good of others. Both Beowulf vs. Beowulf have completely different personalities in the film and book, and do each task in a different way. All that was just discussed of Beowulf was all regard to the concept of honor, good and evil.…

Even though, they both have different impacts in the village. First, Grendel and Beowulf fought for what they believed in. Grendel fought for keeping his ancestor’s hatred against the Lord’s will alive. However, Beowulf fought Grendel because he knew Grendel’s actions were wrong. Next, they both wanted something from the village of Danes. Grendel thirst and hungered for the blood of the warriors that slept in Herot hall. His greed led to warriors being taken and the arrival of Beowulf. Beowulf wanted everyone to know who he was and what he can do. Finally, Grendel and Beowulf were powerful against one another. The two fought a good fight until Grendel lost his strength and Beowulf destroyed him. Therefore, a blood hungry monster and a idolized hero can have some similarities between each…

The two heroes can be compared in many ways. A major comparison would be their physical characteristics. Beowulf is portrayed as the having “the strength of thirty/in the grip of each hand...”[380]. Sir Gawain has humility, “My body, but for your worth, is barren”[357] and takes King Arthur's place in the 'Christmas Game'. Comparing the two heroes' ethics we see that they contrast each other greatly. Beowulf seems to have little morals that he lives by. His pride in himself and loyalty to his country are surely characteristics of a hero, but it seems throughout the whole epic poem he boasts about how wonderful he is. But there is not one line in which he shows the strengths of his own heart. Only his quest to put an other 'notch in is belt'. Sir Gawain never shows a sign of arrogance, only selflessness, honesty, and his loyalty to the Code of Chivalry. Sir Gawain stays true to his word, and seeks out the Green Knight as promised. He also withstands the advances of a married woman three times.…

Another difference it what these heroes go through to achieve such strength and knowledge in battle. Soldiers go through series of bootcamps and training to learn what to do in battle, and achieve great skill out in the war. Beowulf on the other hand, doesn’t train for his skill. Beowulf fought Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and the Dragon without any training whatsoever.…

The first battle Beowulf is faced with is against Grendel. Grendel decides to attack because he is jealous and hates the joy and happiness he hears from the mead-hall; he decides to attack out of jealousy and annoyance. Beowulf decides to fight Grendel to not only gain glory for himself and to create himself a good reputation, but also to serve as assistance to the people of Herot. At the time of this battle, Beowulf was youthful and proud; he bragged on how he would be able to defeat Grendel and save the people. Beowulf chose to fight Grendel without any weapons in order to be on the same “playing field” as Grendel who was also weaponless. Beowulf asks the king to fight alone, with the help of his men only. He stays awake, awaiting the…

Notwithstanding the differences, the two stories are clearly similar. For example, it is relevant that when being a hero, a boon will always be present. In this case, the boon for Luke was the gift of power. Luke was always told that the Force was with him. Beowulf's boon was fame from fighting and defeating the unconquerable monsters. Each of the hero's goals was to save their part of the world. Both achieved that goal when defeating the wrongdoers. Luke defeated his enemy, Darth Vader and his men, as well as saving Princess Leia. Beowulf fought and killed anyone who tried to hurt the people of Geatland…
