Remaining positive during tough times not only helps to overcome challenges, but it also helps people’s health in the long run. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information” (Positive Thinking). Being optimistic is absolutely mental. She continued to pursue her acting career, and she ultimately became the first South African actress to win an Academy Award” (Hall). She did not look at the negative, but instead used her mother’s example to help define her future. Larry Bird is also a prime example when it comes to using positivity to really get to the next level of what he loved. Larry Bird was faced with challenges quite early in life, “When he was 18 years old, his father committed suicide only a year after his parents divorced, and he channeled his pain and anger into his incessant practicing. It motivated him to attend college and focus just as much on his education as basketball — in fact, he decided to finish his degree rather than taking the Celtics up on their initial draft offer” (Hall).
