One of the biggest similarities between the two movies is the culture, that makes the movies what they are. They are both based around the Day of the Dead, one of the most popular and sacred holidays of Hispanic culture. In Coco, Michael accidentally breaks their families' memorial for the Day of the Dead, leading to him running away and getting sent to the land of the dead. His family tried to get him sent back to the real world, but he was too eager to find someone there. In the Book of the Life, Manolo is devastated after Maria's death to trick him into the afterlife, this led to Manolo and his family going through challenges to get back to the real world.
