Jim is the builder and the person who completes all the manual labor. While Aurora is the intellectual who finds deeper meaning in their actions and the situation at hand. She is the realist and Jim is the dreamer. However different their personalities are the two work perfectly together because they find a purpose that builds them into a stable community. They have to repair the spaceship in order to save the five thousand other passengers on the ship who are still in hibernation. They realize that neither of them could save the ship on their own and the job can only be accomplished by working as a pair. This is very similar to the five main characters in Breakfast Club (1985). Each of the five teenagers represent a different groups of society, yet they find a way to work together in order to enjoy detention and also foil their supervisor. At the beginning of the movie she has a shallow personality and that she finds nothing in life pleasing. All she cares about is writing in order to receive praise from her readers. She isn't truthfully happy. When the pair are talking as they look out the observation window Aurora explains that she was only going to live on Homestead II for a year and then return home with a book on her journey. She then later watches videos of goodbye messages from her friends. Upon watching these videos she sees these videos are more about her friends than about her. Aurora realizes she did not have and will not have a meaningful life back on Earth. In the close-knit community she has with Jim, he gives her actual interest in her interests and loves her for who she is. This convinces Aurora to come back to Jim and even be grateful that he woke her up and showed her how to live a meaningful life.
