Comparing Lion In Winter And Becket
Why do some films can be popular and classic? Different people have different ideas. I think that because we can know something from the films and make more thinking about the background and the plots which are connected with some history. After watching these two films: Lion in Winter and Becket, we can know about the medieval history while comparing and contrasting the presentation of King Henry in both two films.
Lion in Winter represented a story which took place in England in twelfth century. The aging Henry wanted to choose the right person to inherit his throne. He invited his queen, his lover, three princes and the king of France to attend the banquet. These people who were invited by Henry had their evil intentions in their hearts.

Henry agreed with her and condemned their sons to death. But he could not kill them by himself instead letting his children escape. Henry and Eleanor went back, meanwhile, they still hoped for the future. When Eleanor went back on the barge to prison, she laughed it off with Henry. In the film Becket, “I have the Archbishop on my stomach, a big hard lump.” Henry had a secret meeting with the Bishop and made his own plan to remove the troublesome but he failed when Becket confronted his accusers. “Becket is the only intelligent man in my entire kingdom...and he is against me!” Here Henry pointed out Becket had become a folk hero among those who were resentful of their Norman conquerors. “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?” Henry, publicly proclaimed that Becket was a saint and at the same time, the ones who killed him would be published.
According to both films, it is easy to see the typical social system. The main feature is that the subjects should be loyal to their kings. To some extent, when the new regime is not built, the people cannot protect their personal rights so they will seek for protection by themselves thus forming the entrusted system to attachment, a kind of relationship which needs sacrificing freedom of the people. In the film, we can also know that convoy system which includes loyalty, protection as well as

When Henry snooped around at night in disguise, he looked for opinions of what the soldiers thought of him. The Chorus called this: “A little touch of Henry in the night” What Henry found out, is that the soldiers all respect him, but some doubt his cause to invade France. He came across one of his old friends, Ancient Pistol, who shows his affection towards Henry, even though Henry killed one of Pistol’s best friends, Bardolf: “The King is a bawcock, and a heart of gold,, A lad of life, an imp of fame…” I am led to believe that Henry V was an ideal King with some traits that could show him as a ruthless tyrant.…

Moreover, King Henry's conscience is not free of self-doubt. He believes that he might have done something to scare sleep away and asks it "...how [has he] frighted [it]...." Because he is deprived of sleep, it is of great value to the king, who directly addresses a personified abstraction, sleep and refers to it as "...Nature's soft nurse..." and "...dull god...." The contrast between the tenderness conveyed in the former and the hostility conveyed in the later address help to illustrate the transition in Henry IV's state of mind as his self-loathing is replaced by anger towards sleep.…

Many times throughout his life, Becket acted without honor, especially with the king. After the king appoints Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, he tries to control and influence Becket’s decisions. In an argument with Becket the king says “You’re chancellor of England; You’re mine!” and Becket responds by saying, “I am also the Archbishop, and you have introduced me to deeper obligations.” Becket basically says that he is now the archbishop, and it is his job to serve God and the people of His Church. This response angers the king and creates more turmoil for the relationship between Becket and King Henry II.…

They rode to Canterbury and found the Archbishop standing at the altar where they killed him before fleeing. When Henry heard the news he was horrified. He knew that his anger had created this unacceptable situation, but he did not really want to see Thomas dead, and especially murdered inside a church. Churches were seen as places of refuge, and violence was absolutely abhorrent. In a short time, miracles were attributed to the place where Thomas Becket was killed.…

I see that there are basic themes that remain in all movies from any decade and those are story’s revolved around love, good vs evil, adventure, fear and comedy. I see the main difference is the shock value that resides in current day movies and the ability to put anything on screen no matter how graphic or distorted the images may be. In Screening Out the Past, by Lary May he discusses regulation censorship of the youth in America and the goal being to preserve their morality and it seems to that they were successful in keeping their youth sheltered longer than in our society today. Another aspect of movies that has drastically changed the movie going experience is special effects and camera activity. With our current technology we can shoot a scene at the beach in front of a green screen. This enables more options for produces to magnify adventure and transcend you from your…

Lotherington says, ‘No king could rule without the co-operation of the nobility, which was largely responsible for conducting the king’s business in the provinces’ and Pendrill supports this when he says that Henry VII’s prime aim was to restore a partnership in government, shifting the balance in his favour after the disruption of the Wars of the Roses. Policies to achieve this combined a mix of the ‘carrot and stick’ technique. The ‘stick’ approach combined military and financial restraints and a reduction in central and local power. Whereas the ‘carrot,’ approach saw Henry develop a reward system for service and encouraging loyalty from his peers. However the question remains, how did Henry do when meeting the nobles. Are we to believe Pendrill who claims, ‘Henry’s relationship with his nobility was, ultimately a failure.’ Or are we to follow Guy’s line who claims, ‘by means of bonds, Henry VII in effect disabled his nobility.’…

Since the beginning of time, man has always been a control freak. He has created and destroyed nations, people and the Earth—truly demonstrating the sheer potential of the human race. It is his nature, however, to be controlling and manipulative. This human predisposition is prominent in George Orwell’s 1984 and the 2011 Arab Spring Revolutions, where authoritarian power is taken to an extreme. In both instances, the people of Oceania and the Middle East are forced upon unfair and dangerous living conditions—in which they are manipulated of their human nature through their freedom and knowledge.…
