Pyramis. "He drew his sword and plunged it into his side" (106). Pyramis saw that her cloth was all bloody, then killed himself for the love of Thisbe. He was so crazy and brave to die for the death of his love. He had no clue that the lion didn't kill her. However, she came to him and watched him die. "I too can love. Only death would have the power to separate us. It shall not have the power now. She plunged into her heart the sword that was still wet with his life's blood" (107). Thisbe killed herself for the love of Pyramis whom died for his love for her. This is crazy and brave love because Pyramis died for Thisbe, whom he thought was killed by a lion. Which then Thisbe killed herself for the death of Pyramis who died for her love. So this happened because the lion tricked them into thinking the other was dead, which lead to the death of each other. In other words love kills the two of them to keep them together. In the story of Orpheus and Eurydice love takes the life of Eurydice. They were married, but right after the wedding, she died from a viper, that stung her. "With my song I will charm Demeter's daughter, I will charm the Lord of the Dead, Moving their hearts with melody. I will bear her away from Hades" (108). Orpheus said this because he knew he had a voice, no one could resist. He made the journey to the underworld , and played his lyre to pass the guard dogs. From there his song traveled through, and it receives the attention from the King and Queen. Hades agreed to give her back, but only on one condition. Hades told Orpheus "that he would not look back at her as she followed him, until they had reached the upper world" (109). Orpheus agrees to the condition, but once he reached the light, he looked back, but it was too soon. Eurydice wasn't out in the light yet, then she vanished forever, back into the underworld. The gods wouldn't let him back in a second time. At the end he was ripped limb from limb by a band of Maenads. This was crazy and brave love because he ventured down to the underworld by himself to get back his wife. He risked his life for his wife by going to the underworld, possibly never returning to the upper world again. This implies that people will die for the love of their life, rather than to keep living by themselves.
In the story of Baucis and Philemon, these two are old and poor. These two were the only ones that invited the gods into their house. No one else let them in because they were dressed up as poor people, looking for a place to stay the night at. They prepared a big meal for the two poor men, who were the gods. At supper they got out some wine, but after a while they noticed the wine was always refilled, never emptied. "We have a goose, which we ought to have given your lordships. But if you will wait, it shall be done at once" (117). They decided to catch the goose to give to them because they realized, the two poor people were gods. When the gods, had a few chuckles from watching them chase the goose. They stopped them and told them that they were gods. Baucis and Philemon were saved, unlike everyone else. At the end they were the only ones on the island. When they died they "formed into a linden and oak that formed one trunk" (118). They formed this way because the love for each other was so strong, which impressed the gods, which the gods made them a masterpiece for everyone to come and see. This story has crazy and brave love because they gave the poor people a big meal and wine; when in reality they had very little food supplies for themselves. It was crazy because they cared for them as much as they could to be good hosts, and to have a strong love for each
other. Love is a crazy thing and feeling to have. For someone to die for each other is one crazy and brave thing. Love is this way because once you find that special someone, there is nothing else more important in this world than that person. The only thing that matters is to impress and surprise the other person by doing nice things. Greek mythology does a great job of showing how love is so passionate, brave and crazy people get about love.
