There once was king named Acrisius, who lived in a magnificent mansion. Acrisius had a beautiful daughter named Danae. There was a man named Apollo, and he had a oracle, that told Acrisius that there would come a day when Danae’s son would kill him. Acrisius was afraid so he locked her in a bronze tower so that she would never get married or have children. Danae became very sad over the years, until one faithful day, a bright light came through the window that was in the bronze tower. A man appeared holding a thunderbolt in his hand, Danae knew it was the god Zeus. Zeus said “I have seen your empty heart, and I wish to make you my wife, if you agree I can turn this place into a beautiful garden.” As she agreed the terrible bronze tower turned into a beautiful garden. One day Acrisius saw a light coming from the window. He tore down one of the walls and when he entered, he saw Danae smiling and holding a baby boy in his hands. This baby was called Perseus.…
However, Medusa presents a sharp bitterness at the prospect of losing control over the man, whereas Les Grands Seigneurs narrates nostalgically for the first three stanzas about how men used to be in the woman’s control. In Medusa, there is more of a sense of immediacy in the narrator to confront the issue – ‘Are you terrified?’ followed by ‘Be terrified’ (the transition of question to command across these stanzas conveys the sense of a threat against the man’s actions). Meanwhile, the narrator of Les Grands Seigneurs seems happier blocking out her feelings of present resent by fantasising about the past, given the first three stanzas are spent in muse with excessive lists of men’s previous values to her – the anaphora of ‘men were’ channels the list throughout – and it is only in the fourth and final stanza that she confronts the present, though it is no more a confrontation than it is a call of despair at the fact that the power levels have now been reserved and it is she that is powerless now, she is man’s ‘bit of fluff’ like men once were her ‘hurdy-gurdy monkey men’. Therefore, the line of conflict and the bitterness behind it is more bold, and ominously decisive in Medusa.…
In the closing days of the Trojan War, all the attempts at peace having failed and disintegrated into war, one man catches the eyes and ears of the bright-eyed goddess, Athena. Leaning against his chariot, Diomedes calls upon Athena to allow him to gain vengeance against the Trojan archer, Pandarus. Not only does she renew his fighting strength, but also she lets fall from his eyes the mist obscuring the gods so he can then differentiate between them and the other mortal combatants. Despite this, she instructs him to not attempt a head on fight with the immortals, but rather to engage only other men. The one exception to this rule is Aphrodite, whom Diomedes is encouraged to engage with vigour. This seems to illustrate one of the recurring characteristics of the Epic genre: a lifting up of the focus to things beyond the realms of mere mortality. By practically telling her champion to attack Love, Athena gives not only Diomedes, but also the reader themselves a blood rush that can only come from a challenge so much greater than simple combat. He must fight a goddess!…
Every author has their own perspective on different myths. As we can see, there are three different versions of the myth regarding Cyclops Polyphemus, written by Homer, Theocritus, and Ovid, respectively. All three authors portrayed Cyclops Polyphemus in different ways, according to their own views. Homer portrayed Polyphemus as a violent monster, Theocritus portrayed him as a lovesick creature, and Ovid portrayed him as a mix of Homer and Theocritus's portrayal. When Leunig proclaims “It is the supreme way to hurt my husband,” she reveals to the audience her inability to concede defeat, ultimately leading to the destruction of Jason’s happiness and the City of Corinth’s order. On the surface, it may appear that Medea’s actions are driven by her homelessness and hereditary ties; she faces being left vulnerable with no “native land” to take her back. Yet, ultimately it is Medea’s pride which leads to her exacting revenge. Through her language and character development, Euripides paints the picture of a scorned woman, who must make others share in her own suffering to feel at peace. Medea will ignore the advice and pleas of the Chorus and Nurse, seeing her revenge out until the bitter end.…
Both Fifth century B.C. playwright Euripides and Roman poet and dramatist Ovid tell the story of Jason ditching Medea for another woman; however, they do not always share a perspective on the female matron's traits, behavior, and purpose. Euripides portrays a woman who reacts to injustice by beginning a crusade to avenge all who harmed her which she is prepared to see through even if it means resorting to the most contemptible methods. Ovid, on the other hand, tells of a much less extreme figure whose humble goal is only to persuade Jason to return. Despite these differences, both Medeas create trouble by acting with emotions instead of with reason, and as a result, put themselves in regrettable situations.…
For my research paper I chose to explore and analyze instances of the great Greek/Roman hero, Heracles (Hercules), appearing in popular culture and the effect his myths had on early civilizations. Considered by most to be the greatest of the Greek folk heroes, Hercules was the embodiment of masculinity and physical power. The word “herculean” literally translates into “having enormous strength, courage, or size” (dictionary.com.) Since their inception, the myths and legends of Hercules have been immensely popular and have had vast influences on people and cultures throughout the world. Over the next few pages I will attempt to compare and contrast several examples of Hercules’ representation in pop culture with the underlying myths that are being depicted. The Odyssey is the epic that has been read time and time again, by varying ages, digging its way into our hearts, becoming an instant classic. Odysseus and the adventures of his homecoming create a much different tale than Homer’s other work, the Iliad, provided. The epic is not about bloodthirsty men trying to get their hands on kleos anymore; it is about the homecoming of a man who uses his wits, not his weapon. In the Odyssey, the characters balance – Homer provides contrasting characters to show the readers the traits that Odysseus holds and how it builds his character development and even those who are foils to him. Odysseus’ own son, Trojan War companions, and wife create the man that is called Odysseus, highlighting the various facets of his personality throughout the epic.…
