think Odysseus and his wife Penelope are perfect for each other and were meant to be together. I also believe Odysseus and Penelope's story is a very good example of how most military families function. I can relate to their story just a little bit because my husband was in the Air Force for six years. My husband served in the Air Froce from 2001 until 2007. He left for basic training just a couple months after the attack on September 11. The six years that he was in the military we got to experience one deployment.…
In Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus and his crew successfully pass the island of the sirens. The heroic accomplishment is narrated by Odysseus, who escapes the enchanting song of the Sirens. In contrast, in Margaret Atwood’s “Siren Song”, a Siren narrates her perspective on luring many men to her island. Both poems highlight the powerful and irresistible song of the Sirens. Homer’s passage emphasizes the masculinity of men and display women as evil creatures.…
Have you ever found it hard to prove someone is your equal? The Odyssey written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, Penelope, Odysseus' wife, proves she is her husband's equal. So by being both very intelligent and loving she accomplishes this task.…
The Odyssey and O’ Brother Where Art Thou have many similarities and differences. The poem and the movie have different settings and time periods. The movie is more of a comedy, and the poem is more of a dramatic story of an epic hero on a long journey. The poem and movie have the same main stories, but some of the details are changed. The Odyssey and O’ Brother Where Art Thou compare and contrast because of the storylines, the time periods and settings, and…
Many people have noticed the similarities between The Odyssey by Homer, and O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? by the Coen Brothers. Both characters exhibit perseverance at great lengths and many other things throughout their journeys. There are many things in common between the two main characters. Both are away from their homes for a long time and are leaving loved ones behind. Their journeys were very similar but different at the same time. Two things may be very similar but things are bound to be different.…
Homer’ s story The Odyssey tells of a triumphant hero named Odysseus and how his heroism saves his entire crew from the sirens. On the other hand, (“O Brother Where Art Thou”?) is not about bravery, but about being under the influence of the women's beauty and magical alcohol. Finally, Margaret Atwood's poem “Siren Song” talks about the women who are called the “sirens” the women who are part human and part bird, they sing the most beautiful song to get the men to crawl over board.…
However, Laertes and Penelope are two of many characters who have known to grieve for Odysseus, which is mentioned frequently throughout the epic. In the underworld, Odysseus’s deceased mother, Anticleia who perished from her “longing”(11.201) for him, informs him…
Homer’s Odyssey, a Greek epic poem, introduces mythological creatures, like the sirens, to an audience that becomes highly influenced and mesmerized by these creatures. These creatures inspire a new piece of literature. For example, Margaret Atwood dedicates a whole poem to the sirens, which is the first mentioned in The Odyssey as creatures that lures sailors to their death, but ,unlike the Odyssey, it is written in the point of view of the sirens. Even though the depiction of the sirens are distinct and told in different point of view, both pieces of writing, Homer’s Odyssey and Atwood’s “ Siren Song”, have similar elements of cleverness.…
“Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism, confronting your fears and allowing yourself to the right to be human can paradoxically make you far happier and a more productive person.” Dr David M Burn’s quote explains how you must face your fears to be a more perfect and productive person. A perfect hero must face al their fears, which allows them to become a perfect hero. In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is portrayed as a perfect hero because he shows traits such as strength, bravery, and wisdom.…
Heroes have physical strength, mental strengths, and moral strengths. They overcome challenges and persevere through stressful points in their lives. But every hero has weaknesses that make them who they are. For example, one of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology, Achilles, who was thought to be invincible, was shot in the back of his left heel. This later killed, him revealing everyone has weaknesses, no matter how strong they are. This is what society most remembers him for, showing that weaknesses also make you the person you are. In this epic, The Odyssey by Homer, we see a hero named Odysseus overcome challenges, but also fall to his weaknesses. Odysseus’ strengths come from his overwhelming perseverance to return home, but with his…

A hero can be anyone. A hero is a brave person who makes sacrifices for others, makes good decisions, and is honest in everything they do. They stand their ground in the face of danger and never back away from a challenge. Ponyboy, Cherry, and Darry are all heroes, because they put themselves in danger for the sake of others. Heroes come in any size, shape, or form.…
Getting to the underworld was not a problem he just had to perform certain tasks to get Tiresias to come out and give him his prophecy. He had to dig a trench and pour his libations in it for the dead souls. Once he completed all of his tasks that is when everyone started to appear. The first ghost he recognized was his soldier Elpenor. When Odysseus saw him he was shocked, he could not believe that he was dead. Elpenor groaned and told Odysseus about his death and now he did not get a proper burial. This is essential to ancient greeks because that is the only way a soul can be at ease in their afterlife. Every single ghost Odysseus came in contact with was miserable, angry, and bitter. They all asked about their family (mainly sons) and had nothing positive about themselves. As said by Achilles he “rather be a slave on earth for another man- some dirt poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive- than rule down here over all the breathless bodies”(Homer, Odyssey 265). For a male to say this shows how bad the underworld is; Ancient Greeks were all about their pride and manhood therefore if he rather be a slave to another man take away all of his pride. Also, when Odysseus was leaving the underworld all the spirits kept surrounding him “thousands raising unearth cries, and blanching terror gripped me” (Homer,…
The Lord of the Rings and Odyssey are two very weird stories in my opinion. The two stories include several similarities. The most noteworthy similarity of the two that were in common was the use of themes. Both included similar themes such as, life, death, power, brotherly love, myth, temptation, and journey.…
The Iliad and The Odyssey are tales written by Homer centered on the drama of the Trojan War. First poem deals with the time during the end of the war, while the latter, which occurs roughly ten years later, explains the disastrous journey of Odysseus fighting his way back home. The character of women in the Odyssey is to exhibit the many and diverse roles that women play in the lives of men. These functions vary from characters such as the goddess ' that help them to the nymphs who trick them. Women in the Iliad exhibit their significance in the lives of the ancient Greeks because they are so prominent in a world so dominated with military relations.…
