The Odyssey and The Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is like the Odyssey because both Dorothy and Odysseus are determined and anxious to return home. Odysseus and Dorothy both meet characters along the journey who help them and evil characters trying to not let them reach home. Good characters who give advice in the Wizard of Oz are the munchkins who show Dorothy where to go to get to the Emerald city to ask the wizard how she will be able to return home. Good characters who give advice and help Odysseus are Athena and King Aleous.

Odysseus spends twenty years attempting to return from the Trojan Wars to his wife and son in Ithaca. In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy is swept away to the mythic Land of Oz, and follows the yellow brick road in an attempt to return home. One of the many similarities between Homer and Baum is the way in which nature plays a role to keep the hero/heroine away. Odysseus has offended the god Poseidon. Poseidon’s rage at Odysseus comes because the hero has blinded the Cyclops. The powerful god uses the sea to create obstacles for the hero, preventing his journey from nearing Ithaca. Poseidon, as we have seen, sets the waves against Odysseus. For Dorothy, The house whirled around two or three times and rose slowly through the air. Transported to Oz, Dorothy’s journey becomes a quest to return to Kansas. Dorothy has a powerful enemy, after she takes the shoes of the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked Witch of the West will plague Dorothy and her companions at great length, especially when she sends the Winged Monkeys to destroy Dorothy.
