Penelope and Odysseus are both highly intelligent but in two different ways. Odysseus show his intelligence when he is stuck on Polyphemus' island. "Cyclops, you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift you promised me, and i shall tell you. My name is Nohbody: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbody." [Book 9 lines 272-275] By telling Polyphemus that his name is Nohbody, Odysseus shows that he doesn't want his real name to be known so he can escape the island with his men and continue his journey home to Ithaca.

think Odysseus and his wife Penelope are perfect for each other and were meant to be together. I also believe Odysseus and Penelope's story is a very good example of how most military families function. I can relate to their story just a little bit because my husband was in the Air Force for six years. My husband served in the Air Froce from 2001 until 2007. He left for basic training just a couple months after the attack on September 11. The six years that he was in the military we got to experience one deployment.…

In The Odyssey written by Homer and translated by Richard Lattimore, several themes are made evident, conceived by the nature of the time period, and customs of the Greek people. These molded and shaped the actual flow of events and outcomes of the poem. Beliefs of this characteristic were represented by the sheer reverence towards the gods and the humanities the Greek society exhibited, and are both deeply rooted within the story.…

“Do this, do that” that is all other gods tell me to do. They don’t even ask! They just command me because they think they are better than me! The think just because I have the same job as a mailman that I am not important, but I am also a GOD! I don’t even care about Odysseus. Calypso is better looking than Penelope. I would be happy in his situation, but no, Athena needs to intervene. She needs to free Odysseus so she can look like she is high and mighty. She just wants to suck up to Zeus, but I have to be the one to tell Calypso to let him go. I was forced into letting her go. If Zeus didn’t favor Athena so much I wouldn’t have had to. Yes, it was a pain to go visit her, but that’s not why I’m angry. I’m angry because Poseidon is mad at…

In book 9 when Odysseus impales a burning wooden staff into Polyphemus’ eye then informs the raging cyclops that his name is nobody is an ideal instance in which directly exemplifies Odysseus’ intelligence significantly benefitting him where using his somatic fortitude would not. Before stabbing Polyphemus in the eye, Odysseus gets him drunk first to ensure he would not have enough coordination to attempt to kill him and his remaining crew members. The triumphant plan of intoxicating Polyphemus before impaling him so that his coordination will be disoriented rather than actually fighting him portrays why Odysseus is often times looked at as an respectable character. In attempt to get the cyclops tipsy, Odysseus says, “Three bowls I brimmed and three he drank to the last drop” (9.405). Then, Polyphemus asks Odysseus…

Homer characterizes Penelope as a mysterious woman who is much smarter and more manipulative than other characters think; ultimately, Penelope expresses these traits in how she can see through Odysseus’ disguise. One can tell that Penelope sees through Odysseus’ disguise when she is “poised” to “set the bow and gleaming iron axes out” and “bring [the suitors] slaughter on” (21: 2-5). Penelope knows setting up the competition will bring about the death of the suitors. She realizes Odysseus will use this specific competition to reveal himself and take back his home; therefore, Penelope knows Odysseus is present. Homer also demonstrates that Penelope understands Odysseus is present when she goes to the hall to meet the suitors, bringing the bow and arrows, which are referred to as “shafts of pain” (21: 70).…

Penelope’s actions while Odysseus is away shows her cleverness. She presents, “ Here is my lord Odysseus’ hunting bow. Bend and string it if you can. Who sends the an arrow through iron axe-helve sockets, twelve in line? I join my life with his,...” (Homer 1252). Instead of hopelessly letting the suitors take over her home, she presents a contest to find out who is worthy enough to take her husband's place. It is nearly impossible to string Odysseus’ bow, but seeing the beggar, she probably has suspects him as being Odysseus, therefore having a shrewd tone while announcing the contest. She also demonstrates cleverness by still testing Odeysseus’ idnetity after he won the contest.…

Love is a powerful word. It has been told that through love, you can conquer all things. Like Odysseus, who traveled for years, for miles, and would endure any pain for the love of his family. Odysseus and Penelope had a very strong connection and marriage compared to others whom lived in this era. An era in which the definition of marriage was not one that we are quite used to. People of this age did not marry someone because they necessarily “loved” their spouse- but for the other things that the man or woman would bring to the table. Women looked for a suitor who would bring in the best gifts along with someone that would take care of the household. Men sought out for a certain reputation. They compete for the one they had laid eyes on by…

Penelope is shown to be contsently in emotional termilol over odyessus throughout the Odyssey. For much of the book she is seen to be crying until a god take pity on her and allows her to fall asleep. But while Penelope is seen to be very leaky, she is also shown to be very rational, and very bounded to many things. One of this things is the funeral shroud that she uses to trick the suitors for three years by unraveling it at night. This was a very interseting part, because in some way it reence backs to Zues putting a viel on chaos and giving it form. Rather in this intsence the viel is a shroud, Penople is Zeus, and the chaos she is bounding is her solution to keep her husbands home without remarrying, or having to give it up, and to move back in with her parents. Penelope is and intersecting character because she mirrors Zeus first wife in many ways, such as tricking her suitors for three years, and by rational finding out that is Odysseus was the true Odysseus, and not and…

Homer played a huge impact on Greek education. His works were considered to be the basis for Greek education for centuries and centuries. Homer was known as one of the greatest poets to live. But Homer wasn’t just a great poet. Contrary to popular belief, Homer contributed much more than great stories. Homer’s stories such as the Iliad and the Odyssey were literary texts that were used for the education of Greek male students, more importantly those of the aristocratic class. Homer’s stories held underlying messages of bigger importance and were usually targeted towards those of the aristocratic class. In Homer’s stories, values that were emphasized and stressed were the noble values of courage and honor. “War is men’s business; and this…
