“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”-Jesus Christ “Mercy is the stuff you give to people that don’t deserve it.”-Joyce Meyer. These two views on granting mercy are shown in “Punnu’s Jihad” by Nadeem Aslam and in “Nawabdin Electrician” by Damiyal Mueenuddin. “Nawabdin Electrician” focuses on Muslim home life and brutal revenge. “Punnu’s Jihad” focuses on Punnu’s story, as well as his culture as a moslim and how Punnu showed compassion towards those who did him wrong. In “Punnu’s Jihad”, Punnu grants mercy to the father and the son because he feels pity and wants to be a good muslim, but in “Nawabdin Electrician”, Nawabdin refuses to grant mercy to the thief, because he believes there is no justification …show more content…
The thief and his son desperately ask Punnu not to run away, for they will either die or be punished by the master. Punnu tied to escape multiple times from the Warlord. When the thief and son take Punnu, he puts a 22 calibre bullet in the vans fuse, which shoots up the driver’s leg. The son on the verge of tears says, “Please don’t run away. We will be punished by the master.” (Pg.74) Punnu at first states that he can not help the thief and the son and he must leave. “I can not help you. I have to go.” (Pg. 74) The son stands helplessly trying to carry his dying father. “I can’t carry him on my own. He’ll bleed to death.” (Pg.75) “How can you abandon fellow muslims?” (Pg.74) “All right. You and I will take him to the mosque and then I will leave.” (Pg.75) Punnu shows a soft side and seems to feel some pity and sympathy for the son and the thief when he agrees to help them to safety. He wants to be a good muslim and feels if he doesn’t help the thief and the son he will not be a good muslim. Punnu even tried to help the son and the thief further by setting a plane’s wing on fire to keep them from freezing to death. Punnu was more like Jesus when it came to mercy because he offered help to those trying to harm
