Compare and Contrast The short stories The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe, and Lather and Nothing else by Hernando Tellez, are two seemingly very different stories. However, both of the main characters experience some conflict internally, and externally. These two characters are also characterized. One can easily see that the barber is a round character, with many characteristics to him, and the narrator of The Black Cat is a dynamic character due to his gradual changes throughout the story. He could be described as dynamic, but he doesn't change throughout the story that much. Possibly, he realized that he was a bigger person than he thought he was. He had so many beliefs and sides to him, proving that he is a round character. Character traits the narrator of The Black Cat could be given include troubled, resentful, a fatuous person, and lonely. He may have had a wife (before he murdered his wife) and many pets, but he favored alcohol to spend his time with. So much so that it started to affect his relationship with his favorite pet cat, Pluto. The text reads, “But my disease grew upon me–for what disease is like alcohol!–and at length even Pluto.began to experience the effects of my ill temper.” He realizes that he has an ill temper, and that it affects his pets but he pays no mind. As a matter of fact, this is why the narrator is a dynamic character. Dynamic characters make big changes, and his changes are not for the better. The narrator was no doubt a messed up man in the beginning of the story, and he felt bad for hanging Pluto, but in the end he did not even regret murdering his wife. After he kills his wife he says, “This hideous murder was accomplished.” which with his word choice one can easily tell that it was more of a “task” than a grievance. Almost like he wants a medal for accomplishing the task of killing his wife and hiding her in the wall of a cellar. This is why he is a dynamic character. All things considered, the two characters share the fact that they have conflicts, but only one character chose to be honorable about it and not murder the other characters. The Barber was a better man than the Narrator, and the Narrator didn't even necessarily have an excuse for his foolishness. This is how one can compare the two
