The 1970’s: An Age of Turmoil and Triumph
Throughout history, from Ancient Greece to modern day America, humans have always strived for a better world and what it could bring. Whether it be advancements in medicine or the principle of relativity, people all across space and time have been fascinated by what they could accomplish or who they could deceive and control. The human race is full of examples of individuals who have gone above and beyond imagination and others who have faltered horribly. The 1970’s seems to embody this more than any other. As English poet Alexander Pope said, “To err is human, to forgive, divine.”

As far back as 2400 B.C., humans have invented things that can help with everyday life. The 1970’s was no exception. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak invented the Apple Computer which could perform 5,000 arithmetic operations in a second. Although it was invented in the 1940’s, the microwave really became an important part of the everyday lives of Americans. The 1970’s introduced a new generation to electronic games. The first video game was “PONG” which was created by a young college student named Nolan Bushnell. With this innovation, he started an obsession with video games that still exists today.
The events of the 1970’s had a strong impact on popular culture of the time. Women began getting into the workplace which caused divorce rates to skyrocket. Teenagers became heavily influenced by Rock and Roll and musicians like the Bee Gees and Rod Stewart. Advertising became important in the lives of Americans due to 69 million people owning television sets. Companies could easily market their product every night during
