Many people know the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but less are familiar with the story of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is told in Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The novel was published in 1996 and written by Gregory Maguire. Though on the surface it seems like another fairytale, this story has a much deeper meaning. Through the use of content, symbolism, and context, there is much more to The Wicked Witch of the West.…

Love is presented as a troubling and destructive emotion in both ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and Duffy’s poem ‘Miss Havisham’. Shakespeare frequently uses oxymorons to convey Romeo’s extreme and conflicting emotions to the audience, ‘feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health’. These oxymorons imply that everything that Romeo thought he once understood has been reversed due to his love for Rosaline, leaving him confused and isolated. ‘Sick health’ in particular highlights the contrast between Romeo’s physical and emotional wellbeing – although he appears to be physically healthy and normal, he is going through emotion turmoil within as his love is unrequited.…

This essay will explore how Harry and Voldemort’s wand in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, and subsequent novels, are the epitome of a dyadic pair. It will explore how Rowling uses the reader’s presuppositions of good and evil and how these human traits are represented within the wands that ‘choose’ (p. 63) Harry and Voldemort.…
I first read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when I was eight years old. It immediately became one of my favorite books. Over the next several years, I read the rest of the series many times, and I watched the entire series of movies almost as many times. However, I’ve never grown tired of re-reading and re-watching the first book and movie. The book, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone upon initial release in 1997, was re-titled later that same year as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for its US release. J.K. Rowling’s 310 page masterpiece was published by Arthur A. Levine Books, a branch of Scholastic Inc. The movie, also titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in 2001 by Warner Bros.…
One of the ideas behind Borge’s Garden of the forking paths is that God allows people to choose. They are free to make their own decisions and forge their own path, but it is one’s path which defines their character. Decisions explain one’s motivation and determination to act on those decisions which by definition means character. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling, characters as Neville, Hermione, Professor Quirrell and Harry Potter defend the idea that people’s choices define their character.…
Both Ms. Strangeworth from “The Possibility of Evil” and Captain Torres from “Lather and Nothing Else” represent the villain archetype; however, Miss Strangeworth better represents it because she enjoys the evil she causes, whereas Captain Torres does not. First of all, the roles of the characters are shown as villains throughout both of the stories. In the case of Miss Strangeworth, it is when she sends her malicious messages to the town without regard for their feelings (Jackson 5). Meanwhile, Captain Torres is revealed as the villain when the barber remembers “...the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the man who had directed it all” (Tellez 1) about the captain. The two of them do horrible things to their respective towns; Miss Strangeworth, by sending her…
In the three texts studied: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (book), Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (movie) and The Nutty Professor it is coherent that society had a big impact on how evil is represented. Evil defined means ‘profoundly immoral and wicked’. Society showed both attributes in all three texts. The wickedness of leaving someone helpless like the trampled girl or when Ivy (prostitute) when she screamed for help shows really how wicked society was. Not forgetting the scene in The Nutty Professor when Prof. Kelp got stuffed inside of a shelf the close-up really shows how gruesome it really was, despite being helped by one of the protagonists he didn’t get any further help. Immorality was conveyed in The Nutty Professor as bullying someone weaker than…
In the beginning of the book it starts with a graphic murder of three Cubans. During this chapter, you get to know how the character Harry is —quick-minded, resourceful, risk-taking, honest. Harry represents in a way where he'd be kind of a perfect man. This character has a wife and three daughters back home in Key West. He has a desire of profiting within the political and economic climate simply for the sake of supporting his family. He gets offers many crime business proposals, but Harry doesn’t have much of a choice if he wants to make any money and return home safely. He feels lots of threats of danger hanging over his head, but he isn't dumb and always thinks quick of an escape plan. Harry is very coutious of anyone he does business with and is always one step ahead of them…
The author explains his statement by giving an example of Enid Blyton and RL Stine, who were declared as bad authors, however they are not. Because, there are no bad authors for children, that children like and want to read and seek out, because every child is different. They can find the stories they need to, and they bring themselves to stories. However, then the author contradicts his statement saying that they writers –and especially writers for children have an obligation to their readers not to bore the readers, not to write dull books that turn children away from reading and from books. Thus, it seems that there are such authors that do not perform duty, and they can be declared bad authors. The main weakness of the excerpt is that the…
Evil, depraved, corrupt and malicious are all words that describe something that is morally wrong or bad. "Macbeth" by Shakespeare and "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding both display how man's sinful nature can be revealed through thoughts and actions. The underlying evil within man is the most prominent theme of both play and novel. The authors show their belief that if everybody revealed their true natures, the world would tear itself apart. At first, Macbeth was an innocent person who gradually turned into a malicious tyrant and the harmless, well-brought up English boys turned into savages when left without supervision. Does that mean even the most exemplary people in society have a side of savagery to them? The question is whether the characters in their primitive actions are reverting to a somehow inferior state of life, or whether they are driven to their natural and rightful states. What is it that leads someone to commit evil acts? Fear, ambition, desire and personal power all tend to delude the mind of causing evil acts and one can become blind to the consequeces of their actions. “Evil” is a place with many unopened doors and untraveled, darkened corridors of the mind — something that's out of control. The problem of evil can be explored by analyzing different character types in "Macbeth" and "Lord of the Flies." As you will see, any normal person can sucumb to evil under the right conditionss; some more than others but everyone has it in them.…
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets start off with Harry spending the summer with his horrible but only remaining family, the Dursleys. The Dursleys are not a very good family. On Harry’s birthday the Dursleys throw a dinner party that isn’t even for Harry. Harry is visited by a house-elf named Dobby. Harry doesn’t listen to the warning and Dobby starts to wreak havoc in the kitchen. The Dursleys end up angry and imprison Harry in his room for the rest of the summer. Harry's friend Ron Weasley takes Harry away in a flying car, and they go to the Weasley home where Harry ends up staying…
First, by looking at the both book’s setting, they both explored evil by using a difference of the theme of evil. In the LOTF, it starts the story in the middle of war where atomic warfare happens. Piggy says, “Didn’t you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb? They’re all dead” this suggested that the war is happening at that time and by usage of atomic bomb, most of the people have been dead and they became separated from the outside world and this shows that the children have no parents or adults to look at him or to decide for them where children can decide everything they want.…
