The Iceman was discovered on the 19th September 1991 by a German couple, Helmut and Erika Simons, who were hiking near the Austrian and Italian border in the Alps. They both had wandered slightly off trail when Erika spotted a head and shoulders sticking out of the ice, she first thought it was a discarded doll, but it was later found out to be an ancient traveler now known as the Iceman. The Iceman was quickly named Otzi, after the valley Otzhal that was north of his death site. At one glance, there really wasn't anything that special about Otzi, the significance of him was that he had become the oldest, most prehistoric and well preserved mummy in the world, not since Tutankhamen had anything stunned the world this much. After the discovery of Otzi, many questions started arising, the main focus question was- Why else was the Iceman such a significant discovery? Many issues also came up; some issues to be discussed include the ethical issues, scientific issues, and heritage issues. The Europeans, during the Age of Exploration, had an influence on both the New World across the Atlantic Ocean, and the much closer continent of Africa. In both Africa and the New World, Europeans had similar influences in that they negatively affected the natives in their search for riches such as spices and precious metals, and wherever they traveled they would spread Christianity to the natives. One example of this is when Cortes arrived in the Aztec empire he demanded they convert to Christianity, and when the Portuguese began colonizing east Africa it didn't take long for the Jesuits to come. However the spread of diseases, the slave trade, and the economic takeover of natural goods differed in the New World and Africa. Africans were accustomed to the diseases of Europe, the natives of the Americas were not enslaved as the Africans were, and the Europeans were unable to take over the natural resources of the Africans because of their stronger government structure.…
The Age of Exploration and The Enlightenment were products of the Renaissance (1400-1648). Both The Age of Exploration (1400-1500) started by Prince Henry the Navigator (1394- 1460) to the beginning of The Enlightenment (1687-1789). It was symbolic that Prince Henry the Navigator erected the first navigational school in Sagres, Portugal where it was considered the rim of the known world at an earlier time. Portugal, situated in the most Westerly part of Europe beside the Atlantic Ocean was geographically well positioned for The Age of Exploration. In 1415 the Portuguese sailed a fleet of some 200 ships from Lisbon to attack the Muslims on the African coast. The two most significant Portuguese voyages of exploration occurred a generation after the death of Henry the Navigator. In 1487, Bartolomeu Dias proves that there is a sea route at the southern tip of Africa around the Cape of Good Hope. Ten years later, Vasco da Gama demonstrates that this route leads to India. The motives for the explorations vary from proselytizing, gold, and land for colonization in the name of their monarchy, aristocrats, and church. These innovative explorations and voyages become a new trend and goal, so other European powers soon followed to undertake them too. It is not until later in Portugal that the spirit of the Enlightenment is demonstrated by the actions of the Marquis de Pombal in 1750 in response to the great earthquake of Lisbon. Both ages were sparked by inquisitiveness, imagination, creativity, and a sense of discovering ways to better their lives. However there is one main difference that stands out between them, The Age of Exploration further empowered the monarchy, church, and aristocrats; but The Enlightenment empowered the individual person.
