Extinction and Existential Justification
Woody Allen, movie director and stand-up comedian, once said in “My Speech to the Graduates” that ‘Mankind is facing a crossroad - one road leads to despair and utter hopelessness and the other to total extinction.’ He describes mankind’s fate as hopelessness or extinction. What he means by that is we are in crisis of finding true meaning and also of physical existence. Cormac McCarthy’s novel, the Road, contemplate these themes further, connecting the extinction and despair of human’s existential meaning. These characters are contrasted to cannibals and other vicious characters. First of all, as the title implies, they are on the road walking down south, searching for food. McCarthy spends most part of the novel in the problem of searching for food and sometimes this makes the man and the boy crisis. This exertion of searching for food in scarcity is evidence of goodness contrasted with cannibals who abandon their dignity for their survival. In the dialogue in the Road, the boy said ‘We wouldn’t ever eat anybody, would we?’ and man replied, ‘No. Of course not.’(p 128) After that the boy answered as ‘because we’re the good guys.’ This dialogue shows their goodness relative to cannibals. So, endeavor of finding food can be exertion of not being corrupted and protecting the humanity which seems to remain very slightly in this world. Extinction happens in the way that burial rites disappeared, corresponding with all culture and religion, technology or modern convenience becomes useless brutal cannibalism spreads over mankind. These show the physical extinction of species and human beings, but also display the self-destruction by losing the good nature of humanness and demonstrating human as destructive to surrounding world. In this way, human existence is meaningless or further, harmful to the entire world including them, negating the value of human existence. However, two main characters are against negativism of the human existence by demonstrating by showing human goodness and moral system. In general, the Road takes human existence in this society as gloomy and dismaying, but not gives up the entire hope by describing the boy, representing all the goodness and moral system. These days, stories of apocalypse are prospered more than ever, and these propose philosophical question of human existence and future direction where human should advance for.
