Comparing The Historical Account Of The Midnight Ride Of Paul Revere
There are similarities and differences between the historical account of Paul Revere’s ride and the poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.” Both texts talked about the British coming by sea to the colony. However, the people who saw the lanterns signals were different. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow used history to make an interesting poem about Paul Revere’s ride, but altered historical facts such as the people who saw the lanterns to make Paul Revere look more heroic. In the historical account, the British came by sea, which is the same as in the poem. Both the historical account and the poem say that the British traveled by sea to attack the colonists.     Revere’s most famous act though, was his Midnight Ride during the Revolution. On April 18, 1775, Paul Revere was given the assignment to ride from Boston to Lexington to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams of the British Regulars on the way to confiscate the militia’s armaments and arrest Hancock and Adams. Lanterns were hung in an old church bell tower to signal to colonists in Charlestown in case both Revere and his companion, William Dawes, were captured: One lantern if by land and two lanterns if the British took the water route. On his ride to Lexington, Revere told patriots along the way, “The Regulars are coming out.” to warn them of the coming British.
