I think that Arnold and Orwell would have disagreed about the possibility of a successful social revolution. Arnold's purpose in writing The Last Word was different from Orwell's purpose in writing Animal Farm because Arnold encourages revolution against dictatorships while Orwell thinks that any form of social revolution will end up like a cycle, producing the same oppressive government that it wanted to bring down. Arnold uses a dark tone to portray humanity’s pursuit of an equal society and an unoppressive government. He also uses this depressing tone to encourage the readers to take the initiative. In contrast, Orwell's Animal Farm shows how power could be abused and how the struggle for social and legal equality is part of a circle that keeps repeating itself.
